We pull into the lot outside the building. I kill the engine, step out, and walk around to her side.
Madeline’s already reaching for the door handle, but I get there first, opening it.
She blinks at me, surprised. “Thanks,” she murmurs.
I offer my hand. She hesitates for half a second, then takes it. Her palm is warm, soft, and I try not to think about how small she feels in my grip as I help her down.
She lands on the pavement, her body close to mine, her scent lingering between us. I let go immediately.
She shifts on her feet, glancing toward the building. “Aren’t you coming up?”
I shake my head. “Actually, this is Asher’s place. I live near the beach.”
She nods, like she’s processing that. “Right. Makes sense.”
Silence stretches between us, something unspoken hanging there.
I clear my throat. “What’s the plan now?”
She shrugs. “Walk Sunny.”
I exhale, rubbing the back of my neck. “I was gonna go for a walk too.”
She grins, tilting her head. “So, we walk together?”
I should say no. I should make up some excuse, tell her I need to head home, go to bed, forget about the way she smelled in my truck.
“Yes,” I say instead.
“You can come up and wait. I won’t take long.” She smiles at me.
That is where I draw the fucking line. I can’t be in a space with her that also has a bed. Fuck no. I know my limits.
“I just need to reply to some work texts. I’ll be right here when you get back.”
She nods, not questioning it. “Okay. I’ll be back in ten.”
I watch her disappear inside, exhaling sharply.
What the fuck is wrong with me?
I tell myself I just need a minute to reset. To stop thinking about how good she smelled, how soft her skin was, how much I wanted to bury my face in her neck when she leaned into me.
She’s back in eight minutes, not ten.
And she looks fucking good.
Tiny cotton shorts. Loose tank top. Hair thrown up like she didn’t think twice about it—but it’s still sexy as hell.
There’s a fresh glow on her skin, like she just washed up, and her scent hits me before she even gets close.
Lighter than before. Fresher. Clean and kind of distracting. Coconut and soap.
She holds up two soda cans. “Peace offering.”
I take one. “What am I being bribed for?”
She shrugs, grinning. “It’s more of a thank you from me and Sunny.”
