CHAPTER TEN
Leo
Ace is talking.
I’m listening. Mostly.
“The defense was too slow on the backcheck,” he says, rubbing his jaw. “We got lucky the Stormhounds didn’t capitalize more on those turnovers.”
I nod. “Ford was solid in net, but we left him out to dry too many times. We need to tighten up transitions.”
Ace exhales. “Agreed.”
The arena is mostly quiet now, the crowd long gone, the lingering buzz of victory fading into the late-night air.
Ace checks his watch. “I gotta head home. We’ll go over footage in the morning.”
“Sounds good.”
He claps my shoulder, then disappears down the hall. I head to my office, open my laptop, and go through emails.
One from management.
One from the medical staff.
One from Elena. Fucking Elena. I sigh, clicking the email from my ex-wife.
Subject: Insurance Renewal
Leo,
The insurance on the cabin expires next week. I sent over the paperwork, so you just need to sign.
Also, I watched the game. You look good behind the bench.
I sit back, staring at the screen. I should call her, but I don’t. Instead, I check my watch, push away from my desk, and lock up for the night.
Stepping into the hallway, I walk straight into Madeline.
Soft. Warm. Sweet. Familiar.
She stumbles back, blinking up at me.
I freeze. It’s the first time I’ve seen her alone since she joined the team last week..
Her blonde hair is down, wavy now, falling over her shoulders. She’s wearing a short red dress, simple but fitted, showing off her long legs. Her gold sandals shimmer under the fluorescent light.
She looks so fucking pretty.
Too pretty.
“What are you doing here?” I ask, voice rough.
She lifts a brow. “I had to get back—I left my phone charger in the locker room.”
I nod, stuffing my hands into my pockets.
Silence.
