She shifts on her feet, glancing at me. “You gonna keep ignoring me forever?”

I exhale through my nose. “I’m not ignoring you.”

She huffs a laugh, no humor in it. “Right.”

I say nothing.

She tilts her head, watching me too closely. “What happened between us?—”

“A mistake,” I cut in.

She flinches, her soft pink lips press together, like she’s trying not to react.

Fuck.

She nods, eyes dropping. “Got it.” Then she turns. “I’ll just… go grab my charger.”

I watch her walk away, my chest tightening. I take exactly two minutes before I follow her into the locker room, but I find it empty.

Then she rounds a corner, and I drag a hand over my jaw, exhaling sharply.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

She’s a few feet away, waving the charger in the air.

“Found it,” she says.

I should nod and walk away. Instead, I grab her wrist and pull her close. Her gasp echoes in the empty space. She stumbles against me, looking up, wide-eyed and startled.

And I realize I just fucked up.

She’s watching me, breathing fast, her wrist still in my grip.

“Leo,” she whispers.

Fuck.

I let her go, taking a step back like distance will help. It doesn’t.

“You know we can’t do this,” I say, voice rough.

She crosses her arms, tilting her chin up. “What exactly is ‘this’?”

“I’m technically your boss, Mads. We shouldn’t be fraternizing.”

Her lips press together, frustration flashing in her blue eyes. “Fine. But you could at least talk to me in the hallways, acknowledge me. I thought we’d at least be friends.”

Friends.

That’s not possible.

I run a hand over my jaw, stepping closer. “I can’t be your friend,” I say, voice low.

She gasps as I bury my face in her neck, breathing her in. Coconut and heat and something so fucking intoxicating.

Her body melts into mine for half a second before she stiffens.

“Leo…”
