I don’t miss the way she nudges his knee with hers.
I take a slow sip of my beer, watching them, watchingher. She’s pretty—too pretty. The kind of girl that gets under your skin before you even realize it.
The bonfire rages on. There’s drinking, laughter, a few of the guys wrestling in the sand like idiots.
But eventually, people start trickling out, heading home or off to whatever afterparty’s brewing. Ford stands, stretching with a grunt, wincing just slightly.
“You’re hurting,” I say, eyeing his wrist.
“I’m fine.”
I snort. “Sure you are. Let me drive you home.”
He rolls his eyes, looking at Madeline. “I’m fine. Besides this is Madeline’s first team bonfire. Stay with her.”
She hesitates, glancing between us. “Are you sure?”
Ford leans in, pressing a kiss to her cheek before murmuring something against her skin that makes her blush. Then he claps me on the shoulder.
“Don’t keep her out too late, Asher.”
“No promises.”
He disappears down the beach, and it’s just me, Madeline, and the sound of the waves.
She exhales, glancing up at me. “So, what now?”
I tilt my beer toward her. “That depends. You sleeping with Ford?”
It’s not really a question—I know that they’ve been hooking up—but I feel it needs to be said. For her.
Her breath hitches. “What?”
I arch a brow. “Come on, Mads.”
She looks away, biting her lip. That blush creeps up her neck, coloring her cheeks.
“Relax,” I say, nudging her with my shoulder. “Ford’s gonna be fine. He plays through worse shit all the time.”
She nods, still a little flustered. “I just—yeah. I know.”
“So, are you?” I ask.
She covers her face. “I’m not talking about this with you.”
I laugh, taking another sip of my beer. “Fine. Keep your secrets.”
The fire dies down as we grab another round of beers and start walking. The beach is almost empty now, just the occasional couple strolling by, the ocean stretching dark and endless in front of us.
“So, my sister’s in town,” I say, kicking at the sand.
Madeline perks up. “Ashley? As inAshley Hart?”
“Someone googled me.” I smirk at her and watch her cheeks turn even more pink.
“Well, I wanted to know my neighbor.”
I grin. “Yeah. Yeah. And yes, that Ashley. The one and only.”
