I read it a few times before tucking it into my pocket and mulling it over as I ate breakfast.
Hey, babe. Just a quick note to let you know I’m going out for a bit. I’m going for a run to clear my head and then I have to pick up Aaron from the airport a little after ten. We’re probably going to hang out for a while, but I won’t be late. I’m sorry the last couple of days have been so stressful—but I love you. Since the first time I laid eyes on you. Don’t ever forget that.
--Jake
Does “don’t ever forget that” mean he’s leaving me, or is he just reminding me of our bond? I didn’t know what’s going on with him, but I have no intention of sitting back and watching my wedding, my future, and the love of my life slip away from me. Not again. Jake and I worked too hard to find our way back to each other to lose it all now.
The first thing I do is leave a message for Dr. Morganstern.
I really liked the specialist when we first met her and was annoyed that she was unavailable for our follow-up appointment. I almost never use my family name to influence people or businesses, but I will and do use it to get a message to Dr. Morganstern. There’s too much at stake for me not to talk to our main doctor directly. Besides, Dr. Sellers didn’t impress me at all, and I want the right person handling our case.
“You have that look,” my grandmother says as she sits at the table and pours a cup of coffee.
“What look?”
“The one that tells me you’re about to kick ass and take names.”
I give her a faint smile. “I don’t know if it’s just wedding jitters or if Daddy said something else to upset him or if it’s something else, but this silent treatment and sneaking out at the crack of dawn isn’t like Jake, and I’m not putting up with it. He will talk to me, and we will sort this out. Today. Tonight. As soon as I can talk to him.”
Gran nods. “That’s my girl.”
“Gran, I don’t know what I’m going to do if he breaks up with me.”
“Never going to happen.” My grandmother waves a hand.
I arch my brows. “Do you know something I don’t?”
“Not at all. But I do know how much he loves you and how good you are together. I don’t foresee this becoming a big deal to him. He’ll work through whatever’s going on.”
“I hope you’re right, but I plan to nudge him in that direction anyway.” I pick at the eggs in front of me.
“You need to eat,” she says abruptly. “You’ve already lost weight, and if you continue to lose, your dress is going to hang on you like a limp rag.”
I chuckle. “I doubt that, but it’ll be fine. There’s cheesecake and steak in my future.”
“Why don’t you call Charles and see if he can fit you in for a massage? It’ll help you relax until you talk to Jake.”
“I will. Thanks, Gran.” I pick up my phone.
After a ninety-minute massage from one of the best massage therapists in Dallas, I almost feel like a new woman. Almost. There’s still this situation with Jake, but I have a plan.
Well, part of a plan.
If Dr. Morganstern would just call me back, then I would have a plan.
I’ve just gotten into the car to head home when my phone rings, and the doctor’s number flashes on my screen.
About fucking time.
“Hello, Dr. Morganstern?”
“Whitney, yes, hello! I’m so sorry I missed you the other day.”
“Please tell me you found my test results?”
“Yes, of course. Do you want to come to my office, or would you rather discuss on the phone?”
“I’m incredibly busy, my wedding is in a few days, so if you could just tell me…” I hear a catch in my voice despite doing my best not to get emotional. “Unless it’s bad news.”
