“Their dress code is smart to formal. I’ll leave you to decide how best to interpret that. And on that note, I’ll say goodbye so you can get back to creating your magic.”
“Yeah, I guess this wedding cake isn’t going to make itself.” Kitty laughed. “See you tomorrow then.”
“I look forward to it,” Gray replied, his voice taking on a huskier note than usual. “See you.”
The phone went dead in her ear, and Kitty returned it to her handbag. But she didn’t get back to her task immediately. Her thoughts were still on the conversation she’d just had with Gray.
When he’d said he’d phone her soon, she thought he’d said it just for something to say. Clearly, he had meant it. And she was glad he had. Kitty was excited to see the sexy fire marshal again. Going back to her icing and decorating, her thoughts still focused on the following evening.
Kitty mentally flicked through the contents of her wardrobe, and her heart sank as she came to the conclusion that she had nothing suitable for her date with Gray. Her only solution was to call up her girlfriends and go shopping that evening after work. After digging her cell phone back out of her bag, she called first Morgan and then Lee, thankful that a nearby mall only closed at nine in the evening. She just prayed it would be enough time to find the perfect outfit.
Pulling into a parking bay,Kitty looked around to see if she could see her girlfriends. Not seeing either of them, she climbed out of her car, hitting the lock button on the key fob as she headed into the shopping centre. They’d probably be waiting for her at the designated spot.
She was looking forward to some girl time. It had been an age since the three of them had hung out shopping, eating, chatting, and enjoying each other’s company. And there was nobody who could find the perfect outfit like Morgan.
Locating them in front of the first shop they’d decided on, Kitty hugged her friends.
“All right, precious. What’s the brief? What look are we going for?” Morgan asked.
“I have no idea where we’re going other than it’s in Green Point and there’s a dress code of smart to formal.”
“Ooh, fancy,” Lee chimed in.
“Yeah, tell me about it. Apparently, it’s a secret where we’re going. Not overly helpful though, right?”
“Green Point, you say?” Morgan asked.
“Yes. That’s all I know other than the dress code I’ve told you,” Kitty replied, pulling a face.
Morgan gave her a sly smile before saying, “If it’s the place I think it is, then, girlfriend, he’s going all out to impress. Right. Let’s go spend some of that hard-earned cash of yours, precious. Mama’s got a plan.”
Kitty groaned out loud. Her credit card in Morgan’s hands gave her nightmares.
Both Lee and Morgan laughed at her.
“Don’t be such a baby. It’s notthatbad,” Lee managed through her laughter.
“Easy for you to say. It’s not your credit card about to be laid to waste by the Mistress of Shopping.” Kitty grimaced, causing the other two to laugh again.
“Oh, come on. I’m not that bad!” Morgan interjected.
As one, Kitty and Lee replied, “Yes, you are.”
On another laugh, the three of them entered the store and got down to the serious business of finding the perfect outfit.
Two hours, thirty outfits tried and denied, and four shops later, Kitty wanted to choke Morgan as only a best friend could. With only two stores remaining, Kitty was also about to call the whole thing off. Her feet were starting to hurt, and she was starving. They’d seen so many lovely things, none of which Morgan had deemed “perfect”. So, they’d kept searching. But now she was tired of trying clothes on.
“Come on, precious. We’ve only got two more boutiques,” Morgan cajoled, seeing the mutinous look on Kitty’s face.
Kitty looked to Lee for support. The other woman just shrugged her shoulders. They both knew what Morgan was like when it came to clothes shopping.
“Fine. Let’s do this. The quicker we get done, the sooner we can eat. I’m starving.”
They were barely through the door when Morgan made a humming sound in the back of her throat and shot off like a greyhound after prey.
“This isit! I told you we’d find it. You’re going to knock the fire inspector’s feet right out from under him. Girlfriend, you are going to besmoking hotin this. He’s not going to know what hit him.” Morgan grinned over at Kitty, holding an almost indecently sexy little black dress in her hand.
The skirt was short and fitted and would cling lovingly to every curve, and it had a slouched top with a halter-neck collar. But the clincher was the back. Or rather the lack thereof. Gold chains crisscrossed to hold the sides together. Kitty fell in love instantly.
