Trace shook his head, “I promise, I'm fine. I just need some sleep. I'll do my best to make it tonight. Text me and let me know when you want me there.”
Brek nodded and watched his best friend walk out the door. He was still unsure of what happened.
He groaned and looked at the mountain of paperwork on his desk. He needed to file it, since Trace had done most of it last night. Barring any emergency, he was going to get it finished and try to make sense of this puzzle of the break-ins.
Over the next few hours, Brek worked diligently trying to figure out what he could.
He hung a map of the town next to the white board and started pinning each house that had a break-in. Brek tried his best to figure out why this man was doing what he was doing.
It didn’t make sense. The randomness of the break-ins and the stuff the man took from each house.
He wrote down each item that was stolen as well as the names of the people that had reported the theft.
But it still didn’t make sense. He wrote Sienna’s name on the board and hated seeing it there.
But if it hadn’t been for the break-ins, he would have never met her.
Brek stood back and knew he needed to see the bigger picture.
He had his hands on his hips and heard someone walk in the station.
He knew Stacy had it handled and dismissed whoever was here. She would let him know if he needed to know.
“Brek, I got another tip about the man doing the break-ins.”
Brek turned, “Who turned it in?”
Stacy was standing with her hands held in front of her as his father walked around her. “I did.”
Brek smiled, “Dad.” He walked over to his father and hugged him.
“What are you doing here?” Brek asked and his dad smiled. “Just checking on my Sheriff. And my son. You have been working a lot, and your mother is worried.”
Brek laughed, “I am the Sheriff, of course I work a lot. It’s only Trace, Jake and I. We're trying to figure out who is doing all the weird break-ins around town. I need to get someone else in here.”
His dad sighed, “I know it’s just the three of you, but your mother worries about you and Trace. You know how she gets. Will you come see us on Sunday?”
Brek nodded, “I don’t work Sunday and I would love for you to meet the woman I met last night.”
Brek’s father raised his eyebrow. “A woman? Is it someone we know? You're lucky you're bringing her. Your mother wanted to set you up with someone.”
Brek sighed, “Dad, I don’t want to date someone mom sets me up with. While I’m sure they are nice and all, I am not interested. Never have been. No thank you. Please tell her about Sienna. I want her to know I met the woman I am going to marry.”
His dad took a step back, “I thought you told me you met her last night. You think you are going to marry her?”
Brek nodded, “You know me dad. I would never be this way unless I was serious. She is it for me. I know it without a doubt.”
His dad was still looking at him with shock. But then he shook his head. “If you believe she is for you, then I'll welcome her to the family with open arms. So will your mother. You said her name is Sienna?”
Brek nodded, “Yeah.” He told his dad about meeting her last night, and what happened to her.
His dad listened with rapt fascination and smiled. “I can’t wait to meet her. I just know your mother and I will love her.”
Brek smiled and hugged his dad. “Thanks Dad. I will bring her Sunday. I promise.”
His dad smiled and then he looked at the board that Brek had been working on.
“Tell me about this. Maybe a fresh set of eyes will help.”
