Sienna sat on Trace’s bed until a soft knock sounded on the door and Grace poked her head in.

“I wanted to see how he is doing. And to see if you needed some food.”

Sienna nodded, “I would love something to eat. Trace hasn’t moved at all yet.”

Grace smiled at her, “I will bring something to you.”

Sienna bit her lip and when Grace turned away, she said, “Will you tell me when Brek gets out of surgery?”

Grace’s face held such a look of love that Sienna felt her eyes prick. Grace walked back over to her and hugged her tightly.

Then she kissed her cheek softly. “Of course, my sweet girl. You are part of the family now, no matter what. Brek has never even looked at a woman. Only went on a few dates, and I made him do so. He never went again after the last one, because he told me they weren’t his girl. If he told my husband about you, then that tells me how he really feels. We thought he would find her when he left for college, and nothing. And then he went to the police academy and still nothing. But he found you. He has always known what he has wanted in life. And he has never bent. Trust me Sienna. He will never let you go.”

Sienna held onto Grace and sobbed. “I just found him. Finally realized that I could be happy. Could love again. I can’t lose him.”

Grace held her tightly and let her sob, all the while she rubbed Sienna’s back and hair. “It’s okay sweet girl. It will be okay. Brek wouldn’t want it to be different. If it was him that had to be hurt, he would take it to save someone else the pain. It’s okay.”

Sienna nodded, and Grace gave her another hug. “I will get you something to eat and will find you the moment we know anything.”

Grace turned to Trace and leaned down, kissing his forehead.

“I hope you know that we will always be here for you. We love you Trace.”

Then she turned and left. Sienna sat down next to Trace again and studied him.

He had grown into a handsome man, and she couldn’t wait to get to know her brother as he was now.

Sighing, she sat holding Trace’s hand until another knock sounded at the door.

It opened before she could tell the person on the other side to come in, and Grace stood there.

Sienna stood up, and Grace nodded. “He is out of surgery. He is fine. His internal injuries weren’t as bad as they suspected and the ones, he had they were able to fix. He will have to stay in the hospital for a few weeks, but he is going to be fine.”

Sienna sat down hard, missing Trace’s bed and slumping to the floor, not caring that she had hit the ground hard.

She sat and sobbed. The relief was so great that he was okay, coming out of her in waves.

A hand touched her head and she looked up, expecting to see Grace. But it was Trace’s hand.

Looking up, she saw her brother staring down at her, and his eyes were glazed with sleep and the medication he was on.

“Sienna? God. It is you. I knew it was you.”

Sienna stood and wiped her face the best she could and looked down at her brother.

He tried to reach his hand up, but winced and Sienna gasped, “Trace! No. Stop! Here, let me sit.”

Trace nodded and she sat back down, leaning into his hand and helping him cup her face.

“It’s really you?” She nodded, smiling and he smiled back and then lay back on the bed.

“I looked for you. Everywhere. I tried so hard to find you, but I couldn’t. I didn’t have any money or any way to find you. I’m sorry. I thought for sure I was dead after the man cut my back open and I was bleeding everywhere. When he left, I tried to get up, knowing that we needed help. I wasn’t sure if you were alive or dead. But after I got up, I saw that you were still breathing. You were in shock. I was too. I knew that someone had to get help, and with your broken leg, I knew it had to be me. I was the big brother, the man of the house now, I had to protect you. To care for you. I tried. But I got lost. I was in shock, and in some pain. But I was able to push through it with the adrenaline rush I got knowing I had to find someone to help us. It kept me going, kept me moving, but the longer I was out there, the harder it was to keep going. The adrenaline wore off after some time and I fell a lot. Hit my head really hard a few times when I fell down a big embankment. It knocked me unconscious and when I came to, I was in a house. One I didn’t recognize.”

Sienna gasped and he continued, “I had no memory of anything. I didn’t know them, but they claimed I was their son, and I went with it. They had cleaned me up, stitched up my wounds, took care of me. I was safe there. Or so I thought. But as the months went on, my memory came back. It came in bits and pieces at first. But I remembered you, and our parents. Remembered what happened to them. I fought with my so-called parents, tried to make them listen. They didn’t care.”

He blew out a breath and winced a little but kept going.

“They needed me. Used me. I was just a cover story to them. They had moved to a new town, knowing that they had caught the suspicions of the cops. So, when they found me, I became their ticket to a better life. One that made the state and their neighbors not question the nefarious things they were doing. Like growing pot in their basement and selling it on the streets. Along with other hard drugs. We seemed like we were the perfect family, but in reality, I was beaten to stay silent and I tried so hard to fight back, to leave. I knew you needed me, but I was stuck in hell and it hurt me more than they ever could.”
