He grimaced and then pulled her in for a soft hug. “I worked hard to get any information I could about you, but I could never find anything. Every single search I tried was useless. The newspapers that had reported about the murders never told your name, and just said that you were placed with a relative. I never knew that you were with our grandparents. I didn’t remember their names. And I tried so hard to remember any information I could.”
He sighed, “I knew dad’s parents were too old. That they were in a nursing home because our grandma had Alzheimer’s, even before our parents died, and our grandpa was not able to care for a child alone. They had dad really late in life and didn’t have any other kids. And there was no way that they could have had you there. They didn’t know who we were anyway. And mom’s parents were never in our life. Mom never talked about them. I knew how hurt she was when they kicked her out of their life when she got pregnant with me so young. So, I didn’t know their names. I tried to look them up by their last name, but there is a lot of Greenhall’s in America. I couldn’t find anything about her siblings either. I couldn’t remember their names.”
Sienna could feel the tears sliding down her face and she had to bite her lip to keep the sobs in.
“The minute I turned 18, I turned in my ‘parents’ to the local cops. And the thing is with that, is the cops had my fake parents in their sights for a long time but had no proof. I wasn’t afraid to take that proof to them, along with my statement. My ‘parents’ got sent to prison for a very long time, and I never looked back. I joined the police academy to try to help my cause. I knew being a police officer gave me easier access to finding you. Finding what happened. I met Brek, and we became friends. He was the first one I had since we were kids. So the decision to move here and be his deputy wasn’t hard. It turned out to be the place I needed to be the whole time.”
He kissed her hand softly. “When Brek told me about you, I knew it was you. I felt it deep in my soul. That I finally found you. And then there you were. Terrified, being held by that man who should have never touched you. I’m sorry we didn’t get there sooner. I should have protected you better. As your big brother I should have always found a way to be there.”
Sienna shook her head, “Trace, you couldn’t have done anything. I am okay. I promise. I haven’t lived the easiest life, but right now? My life is pretty much perfect. I have my brother back. And I found the man I love. And after all this time, my voice is back. I never thought I would hear it again. This isn’t the best situation ever to get my voice back, but I will take it. I have gained so much more than I ever lost.”
Trace smiled and shut his eyes. “I love you Sienna. I hope you know that. How I have missed you.”
She kissed his forehead, “I have missed you too. I had to push it down, how much I longed to have you live, or I would never be able to live my life. I cannot wait to get to know you as my brother again.”
“Go see Brek. Make sure he is all right for me.”
She nodded, “I will do that. I'll be right back.”
He closed his eyes and his breathing evened out and she knew he was asleep.
Slipping from his room, she saw Grace standing outside, and she had tears streaming down her face.
Sienna walked over, “Oh Grace. Are you okay? Did something happen to Brek?”
Grace shook her head, “He is fine. Brent is with him. I heard Trace. Heard everything he said. He never opened up to us about his past. I am so relieved he told you. That he found you.”
Sienna smiled and grabbed Grace’s hand. “Come, let’s go see Brek. Okay?”
Grace smiled and together they walked to Brek’s room.
Brek was sleeping and he was pale but breathing when they walked inside.
She hated seeing so many wires connected to him, but knowing he was alive, was all that mattered.
She walked over to his bedside with Grace and watched her lean down and kiss his cheek, much like she did with Trace.
Then she let Sienna move to Brek’s side. She leaned over and kissed his lips softly and whispered in his ear, “I hope you wake up soon. I cannot wait to hear you talk to me. I love you, Brek.”
She grabbed his hand, squeezed it and kissed his fingers softly.
She loved this man. More than she thought was possible.
Grace touched her shoulder, “Do you want to sit for a while?”
Sienna nodded and Brent got her a chair to sit in. “We're going to go get something to eat. We tried to before, but they told us he was out of surgery, so we decided to wait.”
Sienna gave them a smile, “I will sit with him. If he wakes, I'll come find you.”
Grace gave her a soft hug. “He shouldn’t wake up for a while. See you soon. Can we get you anything? I know I asked earlier.”
Sienna shook her head, “I thought I was hungry earlier, but I'm fine. Thank you.”
Grace nodded and they left. Leaving her alone with Brek.
She leaned over and kissed his cheek softly and then sat back.
Happy to be here in his presence.
