She looked into his kind eyes and he gave her a small smile, “Are you really sure you have a secure place to stay?”

She nodded, and he shook his head, “I am just worried about you. You're so far away from town, and what if something happened to you?”

She shrugged again and turned to write down her answer, “I am fine. Honestly. Yes, I'm scared. I'll admit that, but I've been alone out here for a long time and that won’t change after this. I will just make sure my locks are better. I promise.”

His eyes searched hers and she could tell he wanted to say something but finally nodded. “I will come check on you in the morning.”

She gave him a small smile, and he finally stood. “I am going to check the house one more time. For my sanity.”

She let him go through each room and when he came back into the kitchen, he took his hat off and held it in his hands.

“Everything is secure. Please be safe tonight. Take all the precautions you can and if you need me, you know where to find me.”

She nodded and he turned, “Lock everything behind me when I leave.”

She nodded again and he sighed and then left.

She smiled when he made that tiny sigh and she locked all the doors. She went around her house to confirm it for herself that no one was here and made sure the cats were all right.

Then she walked out to her greenhouse after grabbing a few blankets and pillows.

She locked that door behind her and blew out a breath. She had been terrified until the cop, whose name badge read McGuire on it, came.

The second she had seen him; her fear had fled and she was relieved. That was something she didn’t expect to happen.

It wasn’t like her to feel this way. Especially not in this situation. She thought she would be terrified and have nightmares for a while. Relive every moment of the break-in that took her parents, but instead she had been calm. The second he had pulled her into his arms, it was like she knew he would always protect her.

She didn’t know what came over her, or why he affected her like this, but he did.

In high school all of the boys were just that, boys. Mean and horrible. Not one of them was handsome to her or made her want more.

Not at all. Their hate and violence made their features ugly. No matter if they had a handsome face.

And after graduating, she had become such a recluse that she hadn’t seen anyone for a long time.

The only person she did see was the delivery boy. And he was about 16.

She had never come face to face with a man like Sheriff McGuire.

Sighing in her own silent way, she fluffed out her blankets and pillows and lay down on the hard floor. She probably wouldn’t sleep much tonight, and she hoped that she wouldn’t have nightmares.

Closing her eyes, she pictured the Sheriff’s face again with perfect detail.

The way he made her feel so safe and how he didn’t once give her a look of pity or of disgust after finding out about her lack of voice made him that much more handsome.

She kept his image in her mind and was relieved to note that even though he wasn’t here, she could still feel his strength and his presence.

As she drifted to sleep, all she saw was his face and his kind blue eyes.
