Trace nodded and walked them out of the station and down the street to her car.
He kept his arm wrapped around her the entire time and she felt like flying. She loved that he also had Grandma Viv’s arm in his other one.
He dropped both arms when they made it to her car and opened Grandma’s door first. Then he helped her in carefully.
Grandma Viv grabbed Trace’s hand and pulled him in slightly. He bent down and she whispered something in his ear.
He grinned and kissed Grandma’s cheek softly, then he shut her door and came around to where she was standing.
Emery smiled at him, “What did she say to you?”
Trace smiled and led her to her door, where he put his hands on her hips and his forehead to hers.
He had to bend down quite a bit to reach her, which made her want to laugh, but the seriousness on his face held it in check.
He kissed her, “I'll tell you later. I promise. Go help your grandma get settled and I'll pick you up later.”
He put one hand on her face and kissed her a little deeper. With just the tip of his tongue touching hers.
She melted into him. He pulled away and started his walk back to the station.
She sagged against her car for a second, then opened the door and got in. She looked over at her Grandma who had a huge smile on her face.
“That was something wasn’t it?” She asked and Emery nodded.
“Good for you Emmy girl. I hope you see where this goes. And that you don’t wait too long. I know that isn’t advice you would hear from most people, but I am telling you what I heard from my mom, and what I told your father.”
Emery turned in her seat and Grandma smiled. “When I first met your grandfather, I knew there was something about him that called to me and he felt the same. We knew it was too fast to feel the way we did, but we couldn’t stop it. And when I asked my mother what I should do, she told me this. ‘Great love doesn’t happen to everyone the way they want. It doesn't work on a timeline. It comes when it wants and takes hold of your heart before your mind catches up. Don’t let your mind rule what your heart already knows. Your heart is wiser when it comes to great love. And don’t worry if people think it's too fast. Life is short, but love is not. Be happy and don’t be afraid to take risks.”
Emery felt a tear slide down her cheek. “Your mom told you this?”
Grandma nodded, “Yes. She did. And I took her advice to heart. I knew your grandfather was the man for me and we married not long after we met. And we were happy and in love for a very long time. We rarely fought and I miss him still with every single day that passes. I also told your father this. He knew your mom was meant to be his the first time he saw her. She knew it too, and fought against it at first, worried it was too soon. He told her what I told him and she was convinced. And here they are, happy and still in love all these years later.”
Emery nodded she knew how in love her parents were. She used to love seeing them hug and kiss and it showed her what she wanted when she found her own love.
And now? She saw it all with Trace. From the moment she looked up into his green eyes, she knew there was something about him that she wanted in her life. That he was important and someone that would make her life complete.
That she knew him, even though she didn’t know all the details of his life. She still just knew him. It felt to her as if she had known him all her life.
And when he kissed her? It sealed it for her. She was worried about what people would say, but after hearing her grandma talk about her love, and her parents' love she knew that they would accept her love for Trace no matter what.
They drove home, where she helped Grandma to her bed to take a short nap.
She counted down the minutes until her date with Trace.
