She laughed, “Nope. I just want a job.”
Mila laughed too. “Then you are hired. Can you start tomorrow? There isn’t a uniform. Grandma Beth and Grandpa Joe aren’t super picky. They just want to serve good food. Grandma bakes all the desserts and makes the ice cream for the shakes and for whatever. Grandpa cooks everything in the back.”
Karalee laughed, “Oh they do?”
Mila smiled, “Yeah, hang on.”
She stood from the table and then hurried into the kitchen through a swinging door.
Then she came back out with an older woman, whose hair was just starting to grey.
Mila led her over, “Granny Beth, this is Karalee. She is new to town and is looking for a job.”
Granny Beth smiled, “She is? Well did you tell her we are hiring?”
Mila laughed, “Sure did. She even has experience waitressing. Which means it will be super easy for me to train her.”
Granny Beth chuckled, “That is good news. Well, welcome to Silver Springs. We are sure glad to have you here at the Thomas Family Diner and Cafe. We're all happy to have you here. If you want the job. Mila needs more help and I just can’t wait tables like I used to. I would rather be in the back with my husband coming up with new treats to serve.”
Karalee grinned, “I would love to work here. It seems like a good place. The food smells amazing.”
It did. And the restaurant was homey and inviting. The tables were covered in green vinyl and the chairs were as well.
There was green swirled tile on the floor and the tables were wood. The bar was as well, and it just looked clean and happy.
Granny Beth patted her hand, “Is there something you want to try? Joe is the best cook around. It’s on the house.”
Karalee bit her lip and Mila laughed, “Get her the house specialty.”
Granny winked at her and then stood. She hurried to the kitchen and Mila laughed.
“You are gonna love this, I promise.”
Karalee had never been picky about food. Growing up eating only scraps here and there and whatever was put in front of you didn’t exactly call for a person to be picky.
You ate what you were given, because if you didn’t, then you wouldn’t get to eat.
So when Granny Beth brought out a plate piled high with a burger and fries with all the fixin’s, her mouth watered.
Granny Beth put the plate of food in front of her, and then winked again. “Let me know what you think. I will bring out a slice of pie when you are done.”
Karalee thanked her and dug into the food.
She moaned at the first bite and Mila laughed, “She did try to tell you.”
Karalee swallowed her bite, “You sure did. I haven’t tasted a burger this good ever.”
Mila laughed again and when someone came into the diner, she stood.
“Well hey there. Welcome to Silver Springs. You must be Kian.”
Karalee froze, and watched Mila flirt with Kian.
But Kian had his eyes on her and then Mila looked over and her eyes twinkled as she smiled.
Then she gave Karalee a wink, “Can I sit you somewhere?”
Kian shook his head, “I was planning on sitting with that beautiful woman right there.”
