Chapter 17

Karalee

After hanging up the phone, she looked at the men in the car. They all were pissed.

Xavier especially. He pushed his foot down harder on the gas pedal and they sped down the highway.

She was shaking and Xavier reached over and held her hand in one of his.

“He has Kian. And wants me. What am I going to do? I don’t want Kian hurt on my behalf.”

Xavier looked over at her and Graham spoke up, “You are going to let us do what we have to do. Kian will be fine. He would want to take the pain over you taking it any day.”

She looked back at Graham and the other men and they all nodded, and she just sat in numb silence.

When they made it to the town, Xavier had her duck down, not wanting anyone to see her.

Needing a plan. They drove straight to her old house and parked behind Kian’s car.

Graham had called Gray, who was watching the entire thing from the back of the house, where he hadn’t been spotted yet.

He told them the cops got there moments after Kian had been taken, but that they were trying to play this smart and not get Kian shot again.

They had a warrant to go into the house, but with Kian in there, tied up in the kitchen, with one unwarranted gun shot in his arm already, and them knowing that Carlos had one gun, and wasn’t afraid to use it, they were all wary.

She felt her stomach drop to her toes and when Xavier led her to where the police chief was, she looked at the man with the gray hair and told him what happened.

The man’s jaw locked, and she said, “Carlos only wants me. That’s all. He will let Kian go if I go in.”

The man shook his head, “I can’t let you go in there. You could be killed. I can’t have that on my conscience.”

She shook her head, “I am sorry, but that isn’t your choice right now.”

Then she ran from the men, dodging everyone’s grasping hands, knowing they would stop her if she didn’t and hurrying inside the house.

What she saw inside made her jaw clench. Lenora was still alive and damn it, she would have walked right into a trap.

She had never hated her mother more in that moment than she did in her entire life.

Knowing that Lenora had sold her like she was nothing to a man willing to hurt her, made Karalee see red.

She just needed to get Kian and get out of here.

She would never again think of her mother after this day and wasn’t sad about that.

There was a silver lining with the police outside.

She knew that they could get out of this.

Lenora glared over at her, and Carlos smirked at her. “So, he was lying again was he? That calls for punishment.”

She met Kian’s agonized eyes and she shook her head, “I'm here. You got what you wanted. You don’t get to touch him again.”

Carlos looked over at her, his eyes wide with anger, “You don’t get to talk back to me Karalee. That shit doesn’t fly. I give the orders and you obey them. Otherwise, you get punished.”

He walked toward her, and she backed away, until he was right in front of her.

When he tried to touch her, she pushed his hand away. “I won’t do what you want Carlos. I never will, no matter what sort of punishments you think you can do to me. I am only here to get Kian out of here and you can go fuck yourself.”
