Chapter 1
Kian
When Kian graduated from high school, he too left their small town and joined the police academy.
He needed a change of scenery, a different town and new people and to not see the woman he loved every single day and not touch her.
She was still too young, and he wanted to get through his schooling and then work for a while so that he could save a little nest egg for their future.
He threw himself into the academy, coming out at the top of his class and getting a job at the same department Reid worked in.
They became partners at work, and he did his best to stay busy to try to bury his feelings for Karalee. Both he and Reid made Detective within a year.
He didn’t go home often, even though it was hard for his parents to not see their sons. It was too painful. He had hurt his girl by being stupid, and she wouldn’t even acknowledge his existence now. So he stayed away.
Karalee didn’t date, and that knowledge was the only thing that kept him going.
It was the only thing that made him stay at his job and not work in the damn high school to keep the stupid boys away from her.
He was that pathetic to do something like that and had kept that little tidbit under wraps.
Reid kept him going and they did their best to stay positive even through the things they saw at work.
The big town of Chicago that they worked in was not like the town they were from and seeing the horrors and things they did almost weekly, it wasn’t easy.
Being a cop never was. They had to deal with the hard times and the good ones.
Though those were few and far between.
They did love giving back to the community though, volunteering to do things with the kids in the inner city and trying their best to let those kids know they were important and helping those less fortunate.
Often, he and Reid would hit the streets and they would pay for men and women who were homeless to have a meal, or a pair of socks, or a nice clean blanket to sleep in.
It was the little things that meant the world to those who needed it and Kian was grateful that their mother was the type to not hide the pain and heartache that was in the world, but showed them that helping another was something that would help them in the end.
Kian and Reid loved their job, even with the bad that came with the good.
That was, until their life changed yet again. They got the call from Ailith that Gran had been in a break-in gone wrong and had ended up in the hospital with devastating wounds.
Waiting on the news to see if she would make it through or wouldn’t was the hardest thing in that entire situation.
He had always been close to his Gran and even though she had moved to get away from her sad memories in her house, he still just loved her.
They found out that she would indeed recover, but it was going to be a slow-going process.
After their Gran got stabbed, they took some time off to see her and make sure her house was taken care of.
The carnage that was left behind was something Kian never wanted to see again, and it hurt knowing that Gran had been so hurt and all alone.
She just wanted a new start without the memories of her husband to stop her from living and then this happened.
He and Reid fixed up the living room as best as they could, and they knew that Emery would be moving here to be with Gran after she got out of the hospital.
They were talking as they cleaned her living room and Reid told him that he was tired of the horror and struggles they faced as detectives and wished they had something more low key.
Kian agreed. They loved being detectives but had recently been assigned to a case that had made them want to hold their loved ones a little tighter.
When they were on patrol one night, he and Reid had stopped at a local store for some drinks and a small snack.
