Jacob grinned, “I know. Come, I will escort you both to the ballroom.”
He held out both arms and Rose took one, and Lydia took the other.
Leading them down the stairs and to the ballroom doors, Jacob let her drop her arm and went to lead Lydia into the room when Lydia pulled him back.
“My love, Rose wants to ask you a question.”
Jacob turned to look at Rose with a question in his eyes, “Yes sweet girl?”
“Would you walk me down the aisle?”
Jacob grinned, “Truly Rose?”
Rose nodded. “You are my father Jacob. Of course.”
Jacob gave her a soft hug, “I would be honored Rose.”
The doors opened and Jacob brought her hand to his lips, giving it a kiss before looping her arm through his.
Soft music started playing and Rose saw Lily behind the pianoforte.
While Lily did not love playing, she did it when it was necessary.
Rose felt her eyes warm and she blinked hard to clear the tears away.
She saw Cabe at the end of the aisle and he looked so handsome in his finery.
He was wearing his red jacket that marked him as a Captain in the Navy and black pants with shiny black Hessians.
He had a white shirt and a white cravat, and his hair was brushed back out of his face.
He had a clean-shaven jaw and when he saw her, he grinned from ear to ear.
Rose felt her breath catch in her throat. Lord he was handsome, and he was all hers.
When she reached him, he took both of her hands in his large ones and looked down at her.
His eyes were smiling and full of love. Rose felt a tear slide free and he reached up and whisked it away.
“None of that today love.”
She smiled, “Those are happy tears. I promise.”
The priest from the village was there and he started talking, and Rose heard none of it.
All she saw was Cabe, and her focus was on him. Until the priest asked about the vows, which made Cabe smile again.
“Rose, from the very moment I saw you all those months ago, I knew that my world would never be the same. I knew that I was not good enough for you, but I wanted to be. Wished I was the man for you. Until you proved to me that I am exactly who I need to be. The man that loves you, the man that will always be there for you, the man who will protect you at all costs. The man who is so grateful to be able to call you mine. I love you Rose. More than my next breath, more than my next heartbeat. My heart never truly started beating until you came along and made me live. Thank you for becoming my wife.”
Rose bit her lip and blinked hard against the tears. She mouthed, “I love you.” And he smiled.
It was her turn and she let out a breath, “Cabe, when I first saw you, I knew that there was something about you that made me long to know more. And when I got to see the man you are, it made me realize I wanted it. Needed to have you as my own. Being without you these past few months only made that need stronger. I love you Cabe. Thank you for coming home to me. For loving me and for protecting me from the evil of the world.”
Cabe kissed her softly and the priest cleared his throat, “It’s not time for that part yet.”
Cabe grinned, “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”
He shrugged and the priest smiled. Before she knew it, they were pronounced man and wife and Cabe pulled her into his arms, kissing her like he would never let her go. And she knew it was true.
