Rose squeezed back, and they made it to the ball in an uncomfortable and still rather tense silence.

After getting Persephone situated in her rolling chair, Rose walked her into the ballroom and waited to be announced.

She gave her cloak to a footman and pushed Persephone in the room. They started walking toward a private corner and immediately men started to flock around her.

“My lady, may I have the honor of the first dance?” A Lord asked. For the life of her she could not remember his name.

She sighed softly and nodded, then the next man asked, and before she even pushed Persephone all the way to their seats, her dance card had filled up.

As soon as she got Persephone situated, the music started up, and the first lord came and claimed her for their dance.

He talked about drivel, nothing in particular, and more than once she caught him looking down her dress.

Her dresses had been more daring, and at first, she had loved them. But as soon as she got to the first ball, she had realized her mistake.

Not only did she get the attention of rakes and no good men, but she also garnered lots of negative attention from the women.

It had not been her reason for doing it, her main reason was to push Cabe over the edge, which she loved to do. But it had kind of hurt her as well.

As soon as the dance finished, the next man came to claim his dance, and after the fourth dance, with the leering Lords, and men who had wandering hands, Rose was good and done.

She excused herself from the ballroom, stating that she needed to find the retirement room as she had a situation with her dress that needed attending.

One of the men looked disappointed, but she pushed past him and walked down the hall.

She needed a moment to gather her thoughts, and to try to get back under control.

Before she made it to the retiring room, a hand wrapped around her upper arm, and pulled her into a dark room.

She squeaked in fear, and another hand covered her mouth. She started thrashing in the man’s arms until she smelled his scent. Cabe.

“Hush my sweet. I just needed to get you alone for a moment.”

Rose went pliant and still in his arms, and he kissed her cheek softly. “Are you going to make noise now?” He asked in her ear, and she shook her head.

Removing his hand, he turned her in his arms, and kissed her.

She sighed into his mouth and his tongue touched hers, dueling and playing until they were both breathless.

He pulled back, and Rose opened her eyes. It was still rather dark, but from the light coming in from the windows, she was able to see him simply fine.

She had to blink a few more times to get her mind to focus. After their kiss it was always difficult.

“What are you doing here Cabe? I thought you wouldn’t be here tonight.”

Cabe growled in her ear, pulling her close. “Anywhere my woman goes, I go. Especially when she is wearing dresses like this.”

He pulled at the fabric of her dress, right at her bodice and Rose bit her lip to keep from moaning.

“I thought we discussed this. I am not your woman.” She said, trying to push out of his hold.

His arms tightened around her, and Rose let him pull her even closer to his body.

When she was flush with him, she gasped softly, feeling a hard ridge between them, right against her stomach.

“You are mine Rose. And only mine. I am tired of this. And I hate it. I do not want to keep pushing you away, and while I have my reasons for doing so, I am done with it. I loathe seeing all those men looking at what’s mine.”

Rose’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up at him, and his eyes held heat and so much more that she could not name in their depths.
