She was his purpose. The one who would keep him on target until he had killed the Renegade. And with her love, he would have her with him always.
She would never be left behind. Not really. He smiled as he looked out at the dark night.
He was so grateful he had come to Cole’s aid. If not, he did not think he would have ever met Rose.
She was his reason for living now. The goddess that took pity on his damaged soul and soothed it. Repaired what had been broken.
He loved her more than life itself and would prove that to her by keeping her and her family safe.
By waging war on the man that threatened their peace and happiness.
Cabe walked back over to his desk, he knew that in a few days they would need to go see the Duchess and that he would accompany Rose.
And he could not wait. A knock sounded on the door and he looked up, “Enter.”
His butler walked in the room, “My lord, this came for you today.”
He held a letter in his gloved hand and Cabe recognized Aidan’s seal. He opened it immediately and sat back, the words not something he was expecting.
He did not know last night that Burk had been shot. And it made his gut churn.
He hoped it was not someone from the Renegade’s crew that had done something to his friend.
He stood from his desk and went outside to the mews.
He needed to go see Burk, and Brooks. To make certain that his friend was all right.
He saddled his horse and swung up into the saddle. Riding off into the dark night, Cabe kept his guard up. Not wanting to run into any trouble as he rode the streets of Whitechapel.
He made it to the boxing salon and knocked on the door.
Brooks opened it, his face fierce and when he saw who it was, let Cabe into the building.
Cabe shook Brooks’ hand and Brooks squeezed his shoulder.
“Aidan sent me a letter about Burk. Is he all right?”
Brooks nodded, “He is. Luckily. He was shot in the leg, but it went straight through. And he was hit over the head as well, knocking him unconscious. He is being tended to by Lily. And Lydia came last night as well.”
Cabe nodded, “Then he is in good hands. I just cannot believe someone would hurt him.”
Brooks nodded, leading Cabe into his office. “I didn’t think so either. Seeing my brother bleeding from his leg and from his head was not my idea of fun. Nor do I wish to see that again.”
Cabe nodded, “I understand that. I would not want to see that sight either. I had to come and make certain he was all right. But I don’t want to intrude.”
Brooks smiled, “You could never intrude Cabe. You are welcome here with us. You are as much my brother as Burk is.”
Cabe swallowed hard, happy that he was not alone. Finally.
After his brother had left with his wife and had taken their mother, Cabe had felt so alone and he hated it more than he let on.
He had missed life as a family, but to hear that he was included as their brother made him happy.
“Thank you Brooks. I feel the same.”
Brooks led him up the stairs, and Cabe peeked inside Burk’s room, but Burk was busy with Lily and he did not want to bother them.
So, he gave Brooks a handshake and went back home.
