He rode across town and made it to the courthouse just as several carriages pulled up in front as well.

He gave the reins to his horse to one of the footmen from Aidan’s carriage and waited for everyone to disembark.

Rose stepped from the carriage, looking as beautiful as always and Cabe wanted nothing more than to pull her into his arms and kiss her senseless.

She walked past him, and he reached out and caressed her gloved fingers softly. Not able to help himself.

Rose looked down and over at him in shock, and Cabe mouthed, “You look beautiful.”

She gave him a tiny smile and Cabe followed her into the large building.

Cabe listened to the proceedings with fascination and wanted to punch the old judge.

He hated the doubt and vile things he accused the family of and was grateful to the other judges for keeping him quiet.

When they decreed that Jacob would be freed from the prison, Cabe was thrilled for their family.

They went out to the carriages and he chose not to ride his horse. Wanting to be by Rose.

So he climbed in the carriage, sitting next to Rose, trying desperately not to touch her. Though he longed to.

He knew if he touched her, he would not stop. And he appreciated that as Brooks sat next to her and tried valiantly not to touch her as well. Brooks was a good man.

They got to the prison and Cabe could hear the fight going on inside the warden’s office.

When they finally emerged, and the warden pulled his keys from his pocket, Lydia sat down hard.

Rose hurried to her side and he could tell that Lydia was leaning on her for support.

After a moment of leaning on her daughter, Lydia stood. Pacing back and forth and the tension in the room grew with each pass she made.

He watched as Rose watched Lydia. Her eyes never left her mother until voices could be heard coming from the main part of the prison.

Lydia stood stock still and when the five men emerged with a ragged looking, and bloody man held up between them, she finally snapped and ran for them.

Her heartfelt declaration was heard and Cabe smiled. They had found him and finally had their family back together.

Rose’s eyes had filled with tears and Cabe broke. He walked to where she was sitting and pulled her up into his arms.

Needing her to know he was there. The family followed the five men out of the prison and Cabe led Rose to a carriage where he sat her on his lap.

Not willing to let her go. She snuggled into his side and shut her eyes. A peace that filled his soul came over him and he shut his eyes as well.

These next few days would be hard for the family and while he had a lot of work to do on his ship and getting ready for the war between him and the Renegade, he wanted to be with her. For now, it was all that mattered.

When they reached Cole’s townhouse and helped Jacob into the house, Cabe finally left.

Not looking back at the love of his life. She needed to focus on her family right now and he needed to let her.

It was painful leaving her behind, but he had to. He was still frightened of what she would say and do when she found out he was leaving.

It broke his heart, having that knowledge and it was so hard for him to accept.

But he had to do this. Otherwise her family would be in danger, and that was an answer he could not accept.

Not now, or ever again. When he made it back to his home, Nathaniel was there.

Cabe brought him into the small room and showed him the plans.
