Cabe

London, England Dec 1812

After helping get Burk situated, getting his wet boots off his feet and helping with whatever Lydia needed them to do, Brooks and Cabe left the room.

There was a stack of fresh, dry clothes and dry boots waiting for them in Aidan’s arms.

Cabe was grateful to Aidan in that moment. His real foot was freezing cold and he wanted nothing more than to dress in clean clothes.

Aidan led them each to a different guest room and Cabe shut the door.

He unbuttoned his jacket and let it drop to the floor, then he unbuttoned his waistcoat to join his jacket. His shirt came off next and then he undid the buttons on his front falls and pushed the breeches from his legs.

His prosthetic was protesting being wet and being worn for so long and his leg hurt. More than it had in a while.

He took it off after he sat in a chair in front of the fire and rubbed his leg, hoping his prosthetic would dry out in front of the fire.

His stomach rumbled and he sighed, after sitting for a few moments, his leg felt better, and his prosthetic was indeed dry. Thankfully, his boots were of the best quality and his prosthetic had not gotten too wet.

Cabe pulled the clothes on, and his prosthetic with his new boots. Grateful that he was almost the same height as Aidan and Cole.

The boots fit perfectly, and he wanted to eat, then see Rose. Even if he did not do anything with her, he just wanted to see her beautiful face.

He knew if he was around her for too long, he would want to take her against the nearest surface.

He picked up his wet, dirty clothes and put them on a chair. He would need to either burn them or see if his valet could rescue them.

Not that it mattered. He did not care about any of that. He walked back to check on Burk when Brooks came out of the room next door.

Brooks walked with him in silence and then he walked in the door, not bothering to knock.

Lydia was just finishing cleaning up after everything and she smiled at them as they walked in.

“I called for some trays. You must be hungry.”

Both Brooks and Cabe nodded, but Brooks gave her a smile and a hug. “Thank you, Lydia. For helping him.”

Lydia’s eyes softened and she hugged Brooks back. “You are welcome. You are all as much my family as my own children are. Of course, I would help him.”

She gave Cabe a smile and then left the room. True to her word, several trays were brought moments later, and the men sat down in chairs by the fire.

Cabe’s stomach had been protesting and now that he ate the first bite of food, it stopped.

The door opened and Lily walked in wearing fresh new clothes and she smiled at them.

She picked up the extra tray and brought it over to Burk’s bedside where she climbed in beside him.

Brooks stood and walked to her side, “I will keep watch over you.”

Lily nodded, “Thank you Brooks. For everything.”

Brooks smiled a little, and she caught his hand before he turned away and he stopped. “What bothers you Brooks?”

Brooks sighed and Cabe watched as he pulled a chair up closer to the bed. Brooks’ soft words were heard even where he was, “I hate that Burk got hurt and I wasn’t there to stop it. We have both been wrapped up in our girls to notice what we should have.”

Lily smiled slightly, “Brooks, you and Burk can’t control everything. You also do not need to know or see everything going on about you. If you were always vigilant, neither of you would be happy. Do not beat yourself up over this Brooks. He wouldn’t want you to.”

Brooks sighed, and put his head in his hands, and ran his hand through his hair.
