Aidan sighed, “I know you are right. And I know she is right. I will have to try harder. Thank you Cabe. You said you were here about Rose?”
Cabe nodded, “I am. I know I have not been the man she needs. That I keep pushing her away, and I have my reasons for doing so. I hate doing it. And I do not want to anymore. She is mine and always has been. When I am ready, I will let everyone know why I kept her at a distance.”
Cabe ran his hand through his hair. “I love her. More than my own life. More than my next breath. She is my soul. My light. The person who completes the other half of me. And I am here to ask for her hand. When everything is resolved, I am making her mine. My wife, and the mother of my children.”
Aidan sat back in his chair; one eyebrow raised. “Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting that. I was, just not all of that. I already knew you loved Rose, and that you have a past you refuse to speak about. Do not let that get in the way of your happiness. Do not be like Cole. Or me. We were both afraid of our pasts catching up with us that Cole did not speak to Eden for three years, and I never spoke to any woman at all. Not that I am sad about that, I am grateful I did not. When Rhia came into my life, she was my gift. And I still do not know what I did to deserve her. Every day I thank my lucky stars that she is mine. Do not push her away again Cabe. Learn from our mistakes.”
Cabe nodded, “I won’t push her away. Ever again if I can help it. It has not been my idea, but I have my reasons for doing so. When I am ready, I will tell all of you why I did what I did. I promise.”
The men stood and shook hands. Then Cabe left, riding to see Brooks.
He needed someone to know his plans, and he decided Brooks was the best man to know. He would understand.
Riding straight for the boxing salon, Cabe saw Brooks giving instruction in the ring, but when he noticed Cabe, he called a young man over, Cabe guess was around ten and eight years of age and he took over Brooks’ instructions.
Brooks climbed out of the ring and walked to where Cabe stood and held out his hand. Cabe shook it and Brooks gave a sheepish smile.
“I apologize for speaking to you like I did the other day. It was not my intention and I was too emotional.”
Cabe waved him away, “I understand why you did what you did Brooks. It’s all right.”
Brooks led him to his office and gestured for him to sit in one of the chairs.
“What brings you here?” He asked after he shut and locked the door.
Cabe sighed and fought to not run his hand through his hair. “I wanted to speak with you, but the subject is not an easy one for me.”
Brooks nodded, “I am all ears. Please,” he waved his hand at him.
Cabe nodded and let out a breath. “I don’t know where to start, but I will do my best.”
He let out a breath, “I need to tell someone this, and I wanted someone to know. No, that isn’t right.”
He shook his head, “Someone needs to know these things just in case. To help if something happens to me.”
Brooks sat back in his chair and raised both eyebrows. “All right,” he drawled and waited.
Cabe let out a soft breath. Knowing that it was not smart to get someone else involved, but he knew it was necessary.
He told Brooks about the Renegade, and his normal antics. How he only let one man live and the fact that he and his crew had been saved by the Royal Navy, was a sore spot for him. He told him about the letters he had received and how they had threatened Rose and her family.
Cabe told him about how he was worried about her. And he told Brooks his plan and how he was going after the man soon. As soon as he had more information, he was going to end the Renegade’s life. Once and for all.
Brooks stayed silent and let Cabe finish talking. Then he leaned forward, “Does anyone else know about this?”
Cabe nodded, “I haven’t told anyone else.” He ran a hand over his face, “I don’t want more people involved. I worry enough as it is about anyone I am associated with. He knows too much about everyone as it is. The Renegade is not a man you want to go up against. Nor is he one you want to have cross your path.”
He shuddered, remembering the torture he was put through.
Brooks gave him a sympathetic look. “I apologize for that Cabe. It must have been hard. Just let me know what I can do.”
Cabe was grateful to him. “I just need help keeping Rose and her family safe. She is the most important person and needs to be protected in my absence.”
Brooks nodded, “I agree. Rose is like a sister to me, and I would hate to see anything happen to her. I know that she is going with my girl to a musicale tonight. I was going to keep watch over them from the shadows. My girl’s parents are not fans of mine. Though I doubt they even know I exist.”
“I am sorry they can’t see the great man you are Brooks. Thank you for letting me know where she was going,” Cabe growled, “She left before I could speak with her more.”
Brooks raised his eyebrows, “Left where?”
