Cabe could feel the heat rise in his cheeks. “That is none of your concern.”
Brooks smiled, “Oh, it’s like that is it? Rose was good to me on that ship. And to Burk. If you hurt her, you will answer to me.”
Cabe was the one who raised his eyebrows now. Brooks was normally very laid back, not one to be quick to anger. But he had seen Brooks turn from Brooks to the Angel’s King in a blink of an eye. So, he knew Brooks was not lying when he said this.
Hearing him say things about Rose made Cabe a little jealous.
“Rose is mine. I will protect her from anything that comes for her. I will not hurt her if I can help it. It is why I need your help. I have to chase the Renegade down. And no matter how much I wish it, she cannot come on this voyage. It is too far, and much too dangerous. I do not want her anywhere near that man. Not if I can help it.”
Brooks nodded, “Fine. I will keep an eye on her. She is like a sister to me as I said, and I love her family. They will be protected when you have to leave.”
Cabe nodded, “Thank you Brooks. I knew there was a reason that I came to you. I know you can protect her for me. I need to go see about getting my woman a ring.”
Brooks grinned at him and they shook hands. Cabe left and had a smile on his face, until he walked in the door of his house.
His butler had a grim look on his face and was white as a ghost.
He held a letter out to Cabe in a shaking hand.
Cabe immediately went on alert, “What is wrong? What happened?”
His butler shook his head, “I found a man in your study, sitting at your desk, his feet up with hardly a care in the world. I heard some noise and went inside to find out what was going on and he pulled his gun on me. Threatened to shoot me, and then he handed me his letter. I did not read it, but he made certain to tell me that it was to be placed directly into your hands as soon as you walked in the door. And if it wasn’t, he would know. He said he would be waiting to see what your reply will be. He also says he has an excellent view of your house.”
Cabe’s body went stiff the more his butler described what happened. He ripped open the letter, which read.
Captain,
I see that you are once again being the obstinate and hardheaded man you always were. I was right to leave my right-hand man there to keep an eye on you. He told me you still have not been listening to my warnings and he needed to send you a message. Because you obviously need a reminder. I have not gone anywhere Captain. I am waiting for you to finish what we started, but I cannot do that if you insist on living your life as if I am unimportant. You need to be afraid and yet, you are not. My man has instructions that if you have not been doing what you should, he will hurt one person you love. Do not have that person be the wildcat I know you have claimed. He says she is incredibly beautiful and full of life and fire. He could snuff it out easier than you would believe. I will not wait much longer Captain. I have been patient for my war long enough, and if you do not set sail within a sennight, I will have him kill one person you love for each day you delay thereafter.
Best regards,
Renegade
Cabe felt the blood drain from his face and he felt sick to his stomach. The Renegade’s man knew about him claiming Rose as his own. Knew that he had been seeing her still. Seeing all of them.
He had threatened her life. Threatened her to get Cabe to bend to his wishes. That would never happen. She was going away soon for the Christmas holidays and he would let her. But he would keep watch on her from afar until then and he hated it.
It was finally time. He would find the Renegade and that was final.
He read the letter again. His stomach wanted to rebel, and it steeled his resolve. This was the end. The final push he needed. He needed to prepare.
It was time and nothing was going to stop him now.
No one threatened her life, their lives and got away with it.
