Rose
Northumberland, England Dec 1812
Rose and her entire family had the best surprise when Lydia’s parents had returned.
It was so wonderful to see her grandparents again and Lydia had not stopped grinning since.
She had Jacob back, and her parents. All of the people she had longed for the most.
Rose was so happy for her mother. She deserved to be happy after everything she went through.
She would be going to her grandparents’ house today with everyone as they were having dinner together that evening.
Rose thought she would be more nervous, but she was not. This was a joyous reunion and one that was much awaited.
Lydia had been practically floating from place to place and it had made Rose grin each time she saw it.
Jacob was walking around better, his injuries finally healing the way they should have and every once in a while, Rose would see Jacob pull Lydia close and kiss her.
Rose would smile, to see the love her parents had for one another. It was wonderful to see but made her long for Cabe once more.
Every day since he had left Rose had sent up a prayer begging God to watch over him. To bring him back to her.
She needed him at her side, as her husband and the man that she would grow old with. Have children with.
She wanted nothing more than that. She did not care about his title, his fortune, his leg. None of it.
She only cared about him. His love for her and hers for him. It was all that mattered.
She would often dream of him, of their fleeting moments that they had together. Their kisses, and touches. And she wished they had much more.
Her body had been awakened by his touch, by his body moving along hers and she would only be touched by him and him alone.
Rose sighed and went back to reading the book she had in her lap.
She looked over at the pianoforte and stood.
Abandoning her book and walking to the forgotten instrument.
They still had a few hours before they had to leave for dinner, and everyone was busy doing tasks or chores and Rose had nothing to do and the book just didn’t hold her attention.
She sat at the bench, pushed the lid up on the keys and placed her fingers on them. Closing her eyes, she started playing.
Letting her fingers do what they wished. Play whatever melody they chose.
She kept her eyes shut as she played and with the melody that was being played it made her smile.
This was a song long forgotten. One that had gotten her through a lot. One she had composed long ago and had only played for herself when everyone was away from the house.
She was not worried about someone hearing it now. Everyone was busy with their jobs. So, along with playing the song, her voice came out, singing the words that accompanied the melody.
The song was about pain, hope, and love. How she wanted acceptance and longing about the future and how she wished for a different life.
And now she had one. That made her smile and new words came to her mind and instead of the pain of the first song, it turned into hope.
The last note ended, and the room fell silent as Rose sat, just taking in the quiet.
Until someone started clapping. She opened her eyes and looked up, startled to see her family sitting around the room.
