He looked down and saw just how deep the Renegade’s sword cut his arm. The blood flowed and Cabe took a deep breath and looked away as Nathaniel poured the whiskey over the open wound.
“Goddamn it!! Fuck!” He cursed and banged his other fist against his thigh. “Fuck that stings!”
Nathaniel nodded, “I know. But it needed to be cleaned out. Who knows what was on the Renegade’s sword.”
Cabe let out a breath and willed the pain away. Nathaniel grabbed his needle and thread and started sewing Cabe’s arm up.
He clenched his teeth. “Blake, I wanted to thank you for coming to our aid. I will be forever grateful to you for doing so. I had a feeling that if we didn’t completely destroy his ship, that his crew would have found a way to continue his legacy. It was the only way to stop him. I was worried that if we didn’t hit him hard enough and ruin his ship, that he would get away, and come back to terrorize everyone again. I refused to let that happen. Not this time.”
Blake put his hands up in surrender, “I commend you for your plan Cabe. It was a brilliant strategy and I know that the Renegade wasn’t expecting it. No one did. I know you and your crew have a personal vendetta against him and I know that he threatened your woman. I am on your side and believed in your strategy from the start. You just saved a lot of sailors from him and his sadistic ways. I would have done the same had he threatened my wife. I give you props for coming up with such a bold plan.”
Cabe nodded, “Thank you Blake. I knew we had to do something that no one would have expected. And we are in your debt. Thank you also for taking the prisoners.”
Blake nodded again and Cabe looked down at Nathaniel as he finished sewing up his arm and bandaging it.
Cabe grimaced as Nathaniel finished up and he sat back, his arm burning.
Nathaniel said, “We need to do repairs on the ship. We were hit a few times and have a little bit of damage and I told Tristan to find a place to stop so we can do the repairs we need.”
Cabe nodded, “All right. Thank you, Nathaniel. Blake, what is your plan now?”
Blake smiled, “I will help your ship get the repairs it needs, take the prisoners we captured back to England and then my wife wants me back home.”
Cabe smiled, “Good. Go home to your wife when you can. Thank you.”
His head started to swim, and he shut his eyes.
“We will let you rest.”
Cabe could only nod slightly, “Go get your own cuts taken care of Nathaniel. Thank you for your assistance.”
He was grateful they had made it through the battle and that he still had his arm.
That blow from the Renegade’s sword was hard, and he could have lost his hand. He was never going to forgo his bracers in a fight ever again.
Blake and Nathaniel stood and left, shutting the door to his cabin.
Cabe stood, pulled his clothes off and dropped them in a pile. Then he unbuckled his prosthetic and fell on his bunk, exhausted and at peace for the first time he could remember.
Cabe reached under his pillow and pulled out Rose’s handkerchief and put it to his nose.
Her scent was faint but was still there. He breathed it in, and fell asleep, lulled by her scent and the dream of being able to finally have her as his everything.
Without this threat hanging over their head.
