She rushed into Cabe’s waiting arms and hugged him close.
She started sobbing in his arms and he held her to him, just hugging her and breathing in her familiar scent.
He didn’t realize how much he had missed her, and his brother until just now. He had buried it down deep but being here? It was nothing but pure happiness.
“Shh, mother. I am here now. It is all right.”
She looked up at him, tears still falling down her cheeks and she hugged him again.
“How is it you are here? Are you here to stay?”
Cabe shook his head and led his mother over to a chair.
“It is a long story, and one that will take some time to tell. If I may?”
He looked to Case and Case nodded. “Of course. I too wish to know why you are here. Not that I am saddened by it. Far from it in fact. I didn’t think I would see you again Cabe.”
Cabe sighed, “I know. I did not think I would see you either. I have missed you all. More than I even realized.”
His mother reached for his hand and he let her hold it. She pulled him over to sit in the chair next to her and he sat, giving his mother’s hand a small kiss.
She cupped his face, “You look weary. And troubled. Please tell us what has happened since we left.”
Cabe shut his eyes and sighed. Then he looked up at Case and over at Nathaniel, who nodded.
Cabe told them about his run for the Navy, how his ship was caught in the storm by the Renegade and everything that happened after.
Then he told them of how they had gotten rescued and his wounding.
His mother had gasped and started crying all over again and when she demanded that he show her his leg, he sighed and did so.
She gasped out another sob and he hugged her to him. “I am all right now. I promise mother. I am all right. It took some time, but I can walk without a limp. And most do not know I have an issue at all. I move around with and without it simply fine. Do not worry. I am all right.”
She looked up at him and shook her head. “You went through all of this alone. I left you to fend for yourself when you needed me the most. I just could not stand my grief. Forgive me Cabe.”
Cabe pulled her into his chest again, “There is nothing to forgive. You did what you had to do. I understand that. I do. Case and Emily needed you and you needed to get away from the memories that plagued your past. It’s all right.”
She cried for a few more moments and then Cabe said, “Do you wish for me to continue?”
She nodded, pulling out her handkerchief and wiping her eyes with it.
Case nodded as well. He went on telling them about his recovery and how he went back to London. Then telling them everything that had happened with Cole and the rescue of Cole’s wife. How he had met Rose
His mother smiled and he smiled back. Telling her all about Rose and her beauty and how he fell in love with her.
Then he told her about the Renegade’s letters and how he had to be kept away from Rose even though he hated it, and how it broke him.
He told them of everything that happened after that and about the battle. And finally, why he came to find them.
“I need my family again. I found the love of my life and if she has a child someday, I want my mother there. And my brother.”
Case looked up at him in shock and started shaking his head, but Cabe stopped him. “You don’t have to take the title; I am fine with being the Earl. And I believe that I will do a lot of good with it. I just need you in my life. I have struggled so much alone, and I want to have you with me. At my side once more. I forgot how much I needed you.”
Case looked over at Emily, who had come in the room at the end of Cabe’s discussion. He walked to her side and the two of them whispered quietly for a moment and then Case looked at Cabe.
“Emily and I have both missed England. But we also have loved it here. Yet, as of late, we have been thinking that leaving England so soon was a mistake. That we should go back and try it all again. Though neither of us wish to go to London or be around the ton at all.”
Cabe gave him a smile. “You don’t have to go to London ever again if you don’t wish to. You can have the country estate and I will stay in London and handle the title. If that is all right with you?”
