Rose
Northumberland, England March 1813
Rose woke one morning in the cold of March to small movements inside her stomach.
It felt as if there was a butterfly inside her and she smiled as she brought her hand to cup the bump that was steadily forming under her clothes.
She had kept it hidden from everyone, and though she wanted to tell Lydia, she was happy with her secret for now.
She felt the movements again, this time very gently on her hand and she smiled.
“Hello little one. I am your mother. I cannot wait to meet you. To hold you.”
She would talk to her small bump often, telling it about their father, and of her love for him.
How she missed him, and his touch. How she longed for him to be here, to hold her in his arms.
Then she would tell them about her family. How she loved them all and she couldn’t wait for them to meet him or her.
Rose wanted to believe she was having a girl. She would not know until birth, but she hoped.
Getting out of bed, Rose walked to her window. It was just barely dawn and she loved looking over the estate as the sun came up.
She slipped on a warm cloak and some slippers and walked out of her door, down the stairs and outside.
It was chilly out, and she shivered, but for some reason, she wanted to feel the cold. To be able to watch the sun come up as she sat in her favorite place in the garden.
She made her way to the bench now and sat down, cold but happy to be outside.
The sun was starting to rise, lighting up the morning with the bright golden and red rays and it made her so happy to see.
The sun cast a golden glow about the garden, and she watched as it was bathed completely in the light.
Shutting her eyes, she let the soft rays cover her body and she felt a little warmer as it did.
She hadn’t sat outside like this in a long time, and when Edward had still been alive, she would come out here often and hide.
And watch the sunrise. It was her place of comfort and solace. And for some reason it had called to her.
Sitting in the light, Rose smiled. Loving that she took the time to come outside and remember what it felt like to feel at peace.
And she did feel peaceful. Since the first time that Cabe left, she felt that it would be all right.
That he would come back to her. Looking up at the budded leaves on the trees Rose smiled as well.
New life was coming back to the world. It was beautiful to see, and Rose longed for it.
She knew it was time to tell her mother about her new life that was growing inside her and she held her stomach as she looked around the garden.
“Someday my sweet love, you will play in this garden. It will be your happy place to be. I promise you.”
She stood from the bench and walked back inside, running into Aidan.
He caught her after she almost bounced off his chest and he grinned down at her.
She smiled back up at him and hugged him.
“Good morning Aidan. How do you fare this day?”
