“Cabe, oh thank god.” Cole said as he rushed forward and pulled Cabe in for a hug.
Cole hugged him back quickly and kissed Eden on the cheek, “What is going on Cole? Please tell me that I didn’t get back from one hell only to find that my woman is missing?”
Cole looked down and Cabe felt his stomach clench. “While I would love to tell you what you want to hear, yes, I am sorry Cabe. We have been looking all over the city and have not been able to find her. Burk and Lily are still out searching, as is Brooks. But so far there has been no sign of her.”
Cabe had to swallow the bile that wanted to crawl up his throat.
“I will join the search.” Cole nodded, “I just want to get Eden some food and have her rest, and then I can accompany you.”
Cabe shook his head, “I cannot wait that long Cole. I need to be out searching now.”
Cole gave a small sigh and Eden put her hand on his arm. “Go, I will eat and get some rest. Now that Cabe is here, we have more hope. Go.”
Cole kissed her quickly and he and Cabe rushed out of the house and Cabe swung himself up into the saddle.
“How did you know she was gone, Cabe? Or did you just come to see her?” Cole asked as he got on his horse and rode alongside Cabe.
“I just got back mere hours ago from my journey and Rose was the first person I needed to see after being away. But then my worst fears came true and my purpose for leaving obviously did not fully work. Seeing as she is now in danger.” He snarled and rode to his house, wanting to tell Case and see if there were any clues in the Renegade’s past letters.
Cole rode alongside and when they rode up to his house, Cabe explained why they were there. Cole nodded at the explanation and followed him inside.
“Case! I need you!” Cabe yelled as soon as he walked in the door and Case came running around a corner and down the stairs, “Cabe, what in the hell? Why are you yelling? Did you bring her?”
Cabe shook his head, “No, she has been taken. This is her brother Cole and my closest friend.”
Cole held out his hand, and Case took it, shaking it. His eyes had widened, “She was taken? Are you serious? You do not think she was taken by the Renegade, do you? I thought you said you killed him.”
Cabe snarled again, “I did. Or I thought I did. I ran him through with my sword Case. Straight through his stomach. No man can survive a sword through the stomach. I saw the life fade from his eyes while I stood over him. I promise you; he is dead.”
Case went pale, and Cabe said, “I simply had to tell you, and hope you could help search. I need to find Nathaniel. If it is the Renegade, we will need all the help we can get.”
Case nodded and he walked to the coat rack, picking up his coat and putting in on. “I will have a horse saddled.”
Cole said, “I will stay with Case and meet you at Nathaniel’s. Go. We don’t want to waste any time.”
Cabe nodded and ran out the door, once again throwing himself into the saddle. He was frantic.
He had honestly believed he had killed the man. Had seen him die. Had seen the ship sink. But apparently the man could survive what others could not.
Cabe growled and pushed his horse for more speed, thankful that it was not busy on the streets right now.
Riding hard, he jumped off the horse, mindful of his leg and ran up the steps as best he could when he got to Nathaniel’s door.
Pounding on the door, Cabe waited impatiently for Nathaniel to answer and when he did, Nathaniel was only wearing a pair of breeches. And his hair was wet.
“Cabe? What are you doing here? What’s wrong?” He said when he saw that Cabe was panting, pacing and furious.
“Come in, I will call for…”
Cabe shook his head, and Nathaniel stopped talking. “There is no time Nathaniel. He has Rose. I just came to find you because I need your help. I thought I killed him, but I did not. And now my woman is in the hands of that man.”
Nathaniel’s mouth dropped open. “You did kill him. I saw him. You saw him. He was covered in blood, gasping for air. I heard his breath rattle, and you saw him take his last breath. Not to mention that his ship sank right in front of our eyes. We all witnessed it. He did not get away from that Cabe. There has to be another explanation.”
Cabe followed Nathaniel into the house after Nathaniel got finished explaining and Cabe cursed. “Then what? How is she gone right as we sail home? This isn’t a coincidence.”
Nathaniel hurried into his bedchamber and came out wearing a shirt, jacket and pulling on his boots.
“We will find her Cabe. I know we will.”
