The large man at Persephone’s side cursed and pulled her to a standing position.
He pointed a gun at Brooks’ chest, and he went still.
“Come no closer. I am marrying her right now, and you will not stop me. If you try, then your blood will spill.”
Brooks stayed where he was, and he could feel the tension from the men around him.
“Let her go and I will give you mercy for taking her.”
The man snorted, “I hold the power here, not you.”
Brooks shook his head and took a small step forward, “I think not. Because you cannot marry a woman who is alreadywed.”
Brooks saw Kitty turn red and heard her gasp of outrage.
“You married that barbarian of a man? How dare you! You knew we needed you to wed Reginald.”
Persephone stayed still and didn’t say anything. The man hissed in her ear and she gave a small nod.
“I knew you wouldn’t be a virgin as Kitty promised. I knew it.”
She glared at him the best she could, “I told you and them I wouldn’t wed you. I was not lying when I said it. I am happily married to Brooks and have been for a very long time.”
Reginald snarled down at her, “You were supposed to be MINE!”
Reginald aimed his gun at him and pulled the trigger and Brooks moved, just barely getting out of the way of the shot.
He looked behind him, but everyone had taken cover when Reginald had pulled the gun out and no one had been hurt.
Persephone screamed and he started running toward them, needing to get her away from the madman.
The man pulled a knife from his sleeve and threw it at Brooks, but Brooks moved out of the way at the last moment, but still felt the blade slice across his chest and shoulder.
His wife screamed again and then the man shoved her to the floor when Brooks flew through the air at him.
He tackled the man, punching him in the face over and over, not caring about his injuries.
Not even feeling them, “You took my wife!” He yelled and punched the man in the nose, “She is not yours to touch!” He said and punched the man in the jaw.
“You took her from me again and I will kill you for that!” He screamed as he rained punches down on the man over and over.
“Brooks! Stop! Please!” Persephone yelled and he stilled his fists.
Standing and wavering on his feet, he pulled her into his arms and crushed her to his chest.
“Come, we need to get out of here.”
She nodded and he kissed her softly. “You are injured Brooks. He shot at you!”
Brooks scoffed. “It is nothing.” He shrugged and tried not to wince at the burn in his shoulder and the one in his chest.
She turned to Kitty and Bruce, “I will never think of you again. Not after this day. You have hurt me my entire life, calling it love. Made me be less than I was. Made me sick all the time when I was well. Made it so I never learned how to walk. Never learned how to live. Well that changed when I got away from you. I met the man who loves me. Who has taught me that I am all right just being me. You took everything from me. Over and over. My mother and father would be ashamed of you both and if they were still alive, they would have let me live the life I was meant to. Not one you wanted to force on me. How dare you call yourself my parents.”
Kitty scoffed, “You are nothing but an ungrateful witch. You never appreciated our kindness. Our protection. You made us give up a lot because of your sickness. You are dead to us from here on out. Just as your parents.”
Persephone looked up at Brooks. “Good. I hope you have a good life.”
They turned to walk away, and they didn’t notice Reginald sit up, and reload his gun in a flash.
