No one stopped him as he jumped through the air and tackled the man to the ground.
He was in a good position and held his knife at the man’s throat, feeling the skin give a little under his sharp blade, “You thought that you could take my wife and make her yours? She did not want you. Never has. And yet when you did not get your way, you wanted to kill an innocent woman? What kind of man are you? She never wanted any of this. Never asked to be taken from the man she loves and to be forced to marry one she did not. All she wanted was to be left alone. To be free. And you and they took her choice from her again. And again. What manner of people are you?” He glared up at Bruce and Kitty, and they took a step back, though Bruce glared right back at him.
“To treat her and her mother this way? To keep them tied as if they were prisoners and to make everyone believe that she had died? And that Persephone was ill her entire life? You are monsters and evil. And I am telling you right now that if I ever see you near her again, I will kill you. I am not afraid to do so.”
Then he put his blade away and punched the man over and over until he slumped to the ground.
Kitty glared at him, “We gave her everything and she ran when we needed her the most.”
Brooks snarled, “No you wanted her to live the life you wanted her to live. She never wanted to be treated like she was nothing more than a sick little girl. When she was hale and hearty. You sicken me with all you did to her when she was fine and has been since she left. She is strong and healthy. Never once have I seen her ill. I will reiterate my warning I gave him. Come near her or I again and I will kill you.”
Bruce stepped forward, his face a mask of menace when Brooks felt someone walk up behind him, Grant.
Grant looked at Brooks and then at Bruce and Bruce paled when he saw who stood at his side.
“I will take care of them Brooks. As will Bran. Get your woman home. Officers from Scotland Yard are on their way.”
Brooks turned and walked back to Persephone’s side. He picked her up from the floor carefully and walked out of the church.
Not once looking back. He handed Persephone to Cole and swung up into his horse.
Cole gave him Persephone and together they all rode to Cole’s townhouse and left her past behind.
Persephone’s mother was led to a horse and Aidan helped her up behind him.
Brooks held his wife and rode away from the people that were willing to take everything from him and he was not sorry that he had beaten Reginald.
That the man had been shot and that he would not let them get near her again.
