She looked over at him, “He will not be back. Not now. I will do all I can to make certain they stay away from her.”
Grant spoke up this time, “My partner and I will do what we can to make certain they never see the light of day again. For them to keep you like they did. And for him to mess with your husband’s saddle. That is murder. Now we have more than just Persephone's kidnapping to send them to Newgate. I am grateful we called the men of Scotland Yard when we did.”
Bran nodded, “I agree. We will put them in prison for a very long time.”
She gave them each a small smile, “Thank you.”
They both nodded and she said, “I have missed my daughter. For so long. I hope she can accept me and love me.”
Brooks reached out and softly touched her hand, “I guarantee that she will love you. She has missed her mother for a very long time. Is your name Charlotte?”
She nodded and Brooks smiled, “It's a pleasure to meet you.”
She smiled bigger this time, “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.”
She looked around at the rest of the people in the room and gave them a smile, “Are you all people who are important to my daughter? I know you must be, as you are here and were at the church as well.”
Aidan stepped forward and Charlotte locked eyes with him, “You took me here. Thank you. I apologize for my appearance; I haven’t had much opportunity to bathe or anything.”
Aidan smiled, “None of that matters to us. Believe me when I say that we are happy to have you and hope that you can heal and get strong here. You will always be safe now. This I promise and guarantee you.”
She gave him another tiny smile, “I thank you for that. Being safe is something I do not understand yet.”
Aidan walked up closer to the bed, “I hope that changes. Soon. As soon as Persephone is able to travel, I would like to have you accompany her with Brooks to my house in the country. You will be safe and comfortable. I know my mother would love it.”
She gave a small nod, and then her stomach gave off a loud growl, which made Lily stand and hurry to the bell pull.
Charlotte put a hand to her stomach, “I apologize. It has been a few days since I last ate.”
Eden stood this time, “This will not do.” She swayed back and then steadied herself on Cole’s arm.
Charlotte looked at Eden’s swollen stomach. And gave her a soft smile, “When are you due?”
Eden ran her hand gently over the swell, “In a few more weeks. We are also retiring to the country. I cannot wait to have our child.”
Charlotte reached out a hand and Eden took it. “I promise that you are safe. As Aidan said.”
Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears and she looked down at Persephone’s sleeping form and then back up at everyone in the room and locked eyes with him once again and he gave her a nod, “You are safe. I swear it on my soul.”
Then she nodded and slumped against the headboard. Eden rushed to her side and Charlotte sobbed into her arms.
Lily also moved to where the women stood and Charlotte reached out to her and grasped her hand hard, and Brooks held Persephone’s hand just as hard.
Hating that she had gone through so much. They both had and they would need time to heal.
Brooks kissed his wife’s hand. It was hard seeing both of them so in pain and so broken.
Persephone had been injured all because people were horrible and tried to take everything from her.
He kissed her hand again, just grateful that she was alive and that she was once again back to him.
He hated that she was hurt in any way and that she was in pain.
Her face was pinched a little and he hoped and prayed that nothing happened to their child.
Eden comforted Charlotte enough and pulled her from the bed, “Come with me. Lily and I will make sure you eat and bathe. We shall also get you new clothes.”
Charlotte gave a sigh and gave him one last look, “I will watch over her. Do not worry. She is safe in my hands. I will not let anyone touch my wife again.”
