Persephone blushed, “Brooks is wonderful mother. He loves me. Has from the very start. I cannot imagine a better man than he.”
Charlotte’s face went soft, “I love him for that. For loving my daughter and doing all he could to protect you.”
Persephone smiled, “I am also with child. I hope nothing has happened because of the shot.”
Charlotte shook her head, “Have you been in pain at all? Down there?”
Persephone shook her head, and Charlotte smiled, “Well then, let’s just pray that everything is fine. I certainly think it is. Lily was very careful with you when she stitched you up and she didn’t give you any medicine that would have affected you in any way.”
Persephone sighed and a soft knock sounded on the door. Brooks poked his head in and she smiled at him. “My love, please come in. I wish for you to be here.”
Brooks grinned, and she loved that smile of his. He walked to her side and kissed her softly and then kissed Charlotte’s cheek.
Charlotte looked up at him, “You do realize that since Persephone is wed to you that you are both very wealthy?”
Brooks threw his head back and laughed, “I was wealthy before. Wealth does not matter to me. I only want her. It has only ever been her. Wealth or poor. Sick or healthy. She is mine.”
Charlotte smiled at him, and then looked at Persephone, “I like him.”
Persephone laughed softly, “I do too.”
Brooks helped fluff the pillows under her, “Are you feeling up for traveling soon? If you wish to be there before Rhia has her baby, then we need to leave soon.”
Persephone nodded, “Please. I long to be there for her.”
He smiled, “I shall get the carriage readied on the morrow. We will go slow and be safe as we do. Are you up for traveling tomorrow as well?”
Charlotte nodded, “I am just fine and ready whenever you are.”
Brooks smiled, “I shall make certain it is ready. You rest today. That is all I ask.”
Persephone nodded up at him and he kissed her again. “I love you,” then he cupped her stomach and said, “And I love this little one.”
Persephone’s eyes started watering, and he smiled at her. Then walked from the room.
Charlotte gave a small laugh, “That is the sweetest thing that has ever happened. Aside from your father that is.”
They spent the rest of the day talking, eating and laughing. Getting to know one another as they did.
And Persephone would cherish that day for the rest of her life.

They spent the next day in the carriage and Brooks held her on his lap most of the way.
His body absorbed any bump or hole they hit, and she fell asleep several times in his arms.
When they made it to the manor house, she could not wait to see Rhia and knew that Aidan had come back the day after she was found.
She longed to see them both and to be there when Rhia delivered. It was close and she could practically feel the excitement in the air.
Other carriages had followed, holding Lily and Burk, and Nathaniel.
He was coming to spend time with Cabe and to also be away from London.
They all needed a break from it.
And this was the perfect time to get away.
