They walked into the building, and Carter came out of his office, his head down and looking at a stack of paperwork.
Brooks cleared his throat and Carter looked up, then grinned. He came down to where they were standing and when he saw Persephone standing at his side, his grin grew wider.
“Ah! The infamous Persephone. Back at last with her love. I am so glad to see you my lady.”
Carter picked up Persephone’s hand and kissed it softly, and she smiled. “Thank you. I hear that you are to be thanked for helping my husband.”
Carter gave a slight chuckle when Brooks pulled her hand out of his grasp and Carter gave her a slight bow, “You are welcome. Brooks is like family. I knew also that you would find your way back to him. I had to believe it for him, even when he didn’t want to.”
Brooks held out his hand to Carter, “Thank you for that.”
Carter nodded, “Of course. Now, tell me, are you still on for the fight tonight? Or do I need to scour the streets for the next up and coming street fighter?”
Brooks grinned, “I will be fighting. I regret to inform you though that after this night, The Angel’s King will be no more. Just simply Brooks.”
Carter laughed, “I would hope so. If I had a woman that looked like yours, I would not want to fight either. I would have much more pleasant activities planned.”
Persephone blushed and Brooks fought his laugh, “She is beautiful is she not?”
Carter nodded, “Very. Do you perchance have a sister?”
Persephone burst out laughing, not expecting that question, “I am afraid not.”
Carter’s face comically fell, “Well then, I shall have to keep looking for my girl.”
He turned to Burk, “Your wife is also incredibly lovely. I can see why you keep her hidden away and not around us.”
Lily let out a laugh when Burk pulled her in close, “That’s right. And she is all mine.”
Carter laughed out loud, “I can see that. Do you have a sister, my lady?”
Lily nodded and Carter’s eyes lit up, until Lily said, “I am afraid she is already spoken for.”
Carter’s lip poked out in a pout, “Why must I never have the chance to woo a beautiful woman? It is not fair. I should at least have been introduced.”
Burk burst out laughing, “My friend, she was spoken for since our adventure on the boat.”
Carter sighed, “All right then, but the next beautiful woman that comes along, I demand to be introduced to.”
Lily laughed, “Does it matter to you if they are nobility or not?”
Carter shook his head, “No, but I would wager their family might look down on someone like me.”
Burk kissed Lily’s head, “Her family certainly didn’t.”
Carter knew their story of course, so he grinned, “All right fine. Nobility or not, I am still demanding an introduction.”
Persephone leaned forward, “I hope you find her.”
Carter’s eyes softened, “I hope so too.” He shook his head and then grinned again, “Brooks, are we having another fight with you, say, The Devil? Or is this just a fight you want on your own?”
Brooks grinned, “My brother and I are ready to say goodbye to both our persona’s. So, this is our last goodbye.”
Carter nodded, “I understand. I hope you know the ring is always open to you.”
“Our women wish to watch our last fight. We have Grant and Bran that will sit with them tonight. Where do you think is the most secure?”
Carter pointed to the lone booth that stood alone directly across from the ring. “I sit in there often, but no one is usually allowed to access it. You may sit there if you wish. It will be comfortable, and no one will touch you there.”
The men nodded and they said their goodbyes to Carter so they could get prepared for the evening.
They still had a few hours and Persephone desperately wanted to see Eden and Cole.
He leaned down and kissed her as they left the building that had helped hone his anger into a weapon.
He was saying farewell to that weapon tonight and would never have to wield it again.
As they climbed in the carriage, Brooks gave his silent farewell to The Angel’s King.
