Except they came to the forefront now. She saw a change come over Brooks as he led her into the building and Carter met them at the front, along with two huge men that looked as if they rarely smiled.
They shook Brooks’ hand and then turned to her, and one gave a slight half smile, and the other just stared down at her.
Then he said, “Are you certain you wish for her to see this?”
Brooks nodded, “I want to retire the Angel’s King. It is time. My fighting days are through.”
The one who spoke raised his eyebrow, “If you think she can handle it, then we shall keep them both safe. Our money is on you both.”
Burk and Brooks nodded, and Brooks leaned down and gave her a quick kiss, “I love you. Be safe please.”
She leaned back with a laugh, “Me be safe? You are the one fighting someone else.”
Brooks chuckled, “That is nothing. Honestly, we will be fine.”
Burk laughed, “More than fine.”
Lily shook her head, “You better be.”
Burk kissed Lily and then they were led to the box that Carter was standing next to.
“The men they are fighting tonight are new but shouldn’t give them much of a challenge. With them fighting together, you will see something most have wished would be seen again. These two have not wanted anything to do with my ring in years. Preferring to teach those dandies how to fight instead.”
Carter rolled his eyes and shook his head, “My father knew they had a lot of potential and when they honed their skills, he was right. Those two are some of the best fighters I have ever seen, separate. But together? They are a sight to behold.”
Grant and Bran both nodded, “We saw them both fight before they retired. It made an impression on us, and it has been our wish that they fought again. Just one more time.”
Carter nodded, “Well, if this sweet girl here hadn’t left my guy, we would not have seen the Angel’s King return. I should be thanking you.”
Persephone’s eyes widened and Carter threw his head back at the look of utter shock on her face, “I just tease. I knew how hard it was on Brooks. Trust me on that. We never want to see the man that he turned into ever again.”
She bit her lip and Carter grabbed her hand, “All is well. I promise you this. I just have never seen Brooks that broken before. It was difficult and he did some idiotic things. Trying to channel his anger into fighting, but the ring was not enough for him. So, he took it to the streets. That I could not abide. I made him stop because I knew he was going to get himself killed and I had a feeling deep in my soul you would be back. A love like yours can’t be stopped because of time or distance.”
She felt her eyes well, and Carter kissed the back of her hand. She squeezed his hand, “Thank you for keeping him safe. For not letting his darkness overtake him.”
Carter kissed her hand again, “Of course. Now, I have to get down there, but we shall speak after. Keep them safe.”
Bran nodded and led them to a few chairs that had been set up inside the booth.
Persephone gratefully sat in one and Lily took the other. Lily gently reached out to touch her hand and Persephone looked at her dear friend, “What Carter said is true. It was hard on Brooks, but we all knew you would come back to him. That it wasn’t your choice to leave.”
Persephone shook her head, wanting to say more, but Carter stepped inside the ropes of the ring and his loud and commanding voice rang out over the crowds of people who had come in the few minutes it had taken them to get seated.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I have a special treat for you this evening. A fighting duo that has not been seen in years has decided to grace us with their presence for one last fight. Who is ready to see them again?”
The crowd of men and women started screaming and yelling, stomping their feet on the floor and whistling loud.
Persephone’s eyes went wide, and she laughed at the antics of them all.
Carter let out a piercing whistle, and the crowd went silent again, “I give you, The Devil of the Underworld and of Whitechapel and the Angel’s King!”
The noise in the room was deafening as Burk and Brooks came out of a room on the side of the main one, both shirtless and shoeless.
Persephone sucked in a breath at the sight of her husband, his huge muscles on display, his shoulders and back wide and strong and the hard stones of his stomach that made her fingers ache to touch, as they led to his breeches, which hung low on his hips.
She had to fan herself and couldn’t believe he was all hers.
His bright blue eyes found hers and he gave her a head nod and mouthed that he loved her.
