Chapter 2
Mila
When she was growing up, she had a normal childhood, filled with love.
Her parents, and her grandparents showed her daily exactly what she wanted when she finally got married and she planned her wedding for years.
But she hadn’t found her perfect guy yet. Growing up in a small town, she met and knew each and every man that lived there.
Not a single one struck her fancy. Yes, Brek was handsome and was kind to everyone, but she only saw him as a friend.
He was older than her anyway, and because of that she didn’t ever chase after him like some of the other girls had. She was happy to work in the diner, alone.
She was content with her life and knew that Brek was happy being single as well. They had become friends of sorts when he moved back and became the Sheriff because the diner was next door to the Sheriff’s department.
She knew he was lonely, and she felt for him, because he too had seen what the town had to offer and while there were some truly amazing girls here, he never felt for any of them.
She had overheard his conversation with Trace one day about it and knew that both men wanted to find their one girl.
But neither had. Not yet.
That is until Brek fell so hard for his girl within days of meeting her. Mila knew who his girl was, as they had gone to school together. Sienna was a year younger than she was.
She got bullied endlessly and Mila always hated it, but she too was quiet and shy herself and didn’t know how to make friends.
She was the girl who worked at the diner and that was it.
She wanted so desperately to try to talk to Sienna, but had a hard time trying to strike up a conversation, and Sienna was mute and stuck to herself and didn’t really acknowledge anyone at school because of the bullying, so Mila let it go.
She hated it though. Knowing that Sienna was lonely and had a hard life.
No one knew why she couldn’t talk and the rumors that flew around the school were ridiculous.
She didn’t even want to recall them at all. How horrible some were.
Mila would come home every day hating that she never got up the courage to talk to Sienna.
She would tell her mom, Malena about it, and she'd always encourage her to talk to her.
Her dad, Matias would come hug her, his large frame dwarfing hers.
“Mi bellisa, you can do it. Talk to this girl. We will befriend her and feed her. She will never want to leave then.”
She would laugh and then her little sister would walk in, “Come on Mila, you can do it. She needs a friend like you.”
“Thanks Mackenzie. I will try.”
Over the next few months, she did her best, but found that trying to get Sienna to be her friend was a feat that she couldn’t accomplish.
No matter what she tried, she was too shy, and Sienna was not happy to have someone try to talk to her.
She assumed that she was going to be made fun of again, so anytime Mila approached her, Sienna would turn away from her.
And she stopped trying, though it wasn’t easy.
She just came home each day after school, sad, lonely and hurting that she hadn’t befriended the girl who needed a friend like she did and was taught by her grandma how to cook and bake.
And she loved the lessons she learned.
