He heard Nikolai’s chair squeak, “Why were you in the hospital?”

“That’s not important right now. I just had Xavier look into it and you have all you need. Just know that I am so sorry for everything that happened that night. I tried to see you right after that night and for months, but I was always denied and then I was transferred to a new precinct.”

He ran his hand over his hair and undid the straps on his soft sling, “I just wanted to give you the information so that you were aware. So that you could be free.”

Nikolai let out his own sigh, “Reid, I have never blamed you or hated you. I knew you were a cop from the beginning and yet, you still were my closest friend along with Dmitri. I accept your apology, but it was never your doing at all.”

Reid squeezed his eyes shut, “Thank you Nikolai. It means a lot to me.”

“Of course. Now that I have this information it will go a long way to keep me free and it was all your doing. So thank you.”

“You are welcome. Take care.”

Nikolai stopped him, “Wait. Reid, tell me what is going on. Why were you in the hospital?”

Reid let out a soft breath, “It really doesn’t matter.”

“Reid, damn it. Stop being such a stubborn ass. You are my closest friend. What happened?”

He told Nikolai about his Gran and why they all decided to move and about Isabelle.

Then he told him about Emery and her kidnapping, and the bomb that Trace had set on accident.

How he had tackled Trace out of the way and got the full brunt of the blast and his healing up until this point.

“I am scarred all over my back, up my neck and down my leg. It isn’t pretty. And my shoulder was fucked up because it was dislocated in the blast and it tore my rotator cuff. But I couldn’t fix it until my skin healed a little more and I still don’t have my full range of motion.”

Nikolai let out a breath, “Fuck. You almost died and I would have never known. Where are you now?”

He chuckled softly, “I am still in Silver Springs. I am at the mayor's house and they have been helping me. Along with, well um, Mila.”

“Mila? Has my dear friend finally found a woman that turned his head?”

Reid felt the blush and was glad that Nikolai couldn’t see him, “Yes I have. She is beautiful Nikolai. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen.”

Nikolai let out a sigh, “You are very lucky my friend. I wish I could find the one meant for me.”

Reid smiled, “You will. Don’t give up hope.”

“I haven’t yet. Be careful out there. I won’t be around to watch your back. I worry for you now that you have found out this information.”

Reid nodded, “I will. I promise. Besides, he doesn’t know exactly where I am. You need to be safe too. I hope to see you again soon.”

“I hope for that too. Maybe I will come visit you in this town of Silver Springs.”

Reid laughed, “You do that Nikolai. Tell Dmitri thank you.”

“I hear you Reid. You are welcome.”

Reid smiled, “Take care of yourselves. And I hope that what Xavier and I found will help to keep you out of prison.”

Nikolai let out a soft laugh, “I hope for that too.”

They said goodbye and Reid let out a deep breath. He didn’t expect things to go that well and he was so relieved to talk to Nikolai again.

He stood and needed to shower and to call Mila.

He sent her a text first.
