Prologue

Soraya

Before we begin, you might wonder how this story is possible. How merpeople live and come to be. The answer is this. Magic. Ancient magic.

Magic from god's long gone. Ones that created the first mermaid. To see what it was to be half fish, half human.

The joy that was felt from being free from the rules and restrictions on the shores was something they didn’t realize would be so addicting.

Though they found that it was lonely down in the depths. So they made it possible to speak to the animals that swam alongside them, to breathe and speak to each other as if they were above the waters.

They also made it possible for those below the waters to control them. To have the powers that they themselves had.

They wanted their world to continue. So they made it possible for the merpeople to find the other half of their soul with someone who appreciated the sea like the gods did. And to be able to mate with their other half like the gods did when they were humans.

The magic they had also allowed the merpeople to be able to turn their mate into a merperson as well.

To come and go at will from the sea as the gods themselves did.

They fell in love with the sea with each day that they swam in its waters, and created the first tribes there, to carry on with the legacy they started.

And so the magic they gave to the merpeople lives on.

Magic that allows merpeople to live freely without detection from curious humans.

The humans don’t realize that depths of the oceans are far deeper than they know, and more happens down there than most would understand.

For thousands of years, merpeople have lived without fear of discovery. And they have thrived.

And this is where our story begins.

* * *

Being a mermaid was something the women in her tribe loved. Something that made others so joyful. But to her it was a curse and had been for the majority of her life.

She was born of the two most powerful lines in the merpeople world which meant that she had powers that most didn’t.

Her mother, Marit Nero, had met her father, Destan Vanne at one of the annual meetings of the mermaids.

They came from opposite sides of the ocean and her mother told her that it felt as if a hurricane hit when they locked eyes with each other.

Marit had told her that she knew immediately that he was her true mate and he did as well. That they were meant to be.

They hadn’t questioned it, just jumped in fin first.

Because of Destan’s rank as the prince of the merpeople tribes, Marit’s parents had celebrated and loved that their daughter had someone as powerful as she, to be by her side.

As Marit was a princess in their own small tribe.

Their love was something to be envied and Soraya heard that many wished they too could find their mates and be as happy as Marit and Destan were.

Before they had their children, Destan became the king of the tribes and Marit had supported him fully, standing by his side and ready to help him in any way.

They had her brother, Tridenton first. After many years of trying. He was born looking exactly like their father, with the same yellow tail and Destan’s dark blonde hair. He had eyes like their mother though, with purple accents in the blue.

Marit told her the celebration for Tridenton’s birth lasted a month. All the merpeople in the seas had come to give their respects and their joy that a prince had been born to their sovereign leader.

And seven years later, she and her sister came along.
