He wrapped it around his hips, “How did you know mermaids were real?”

Fin stood, “Do you remember when we were young? I was ten and you were about twelve?”

Cruiz nodded, “I do, but I’m afraid you are going to have be to more specific.”

Fin laughed, “One day, you and I were on the beach, and we wanted to go swimming. Except, right when I started getting deep in the water, I got caught in a cross current, and the undertow grabbed me and I got swept out to sea. Deep. You didn’t know what happened, because you were swimming in a different direction and I couldn’t call out to you.”

Cruiz raised his eyebrow, “Alright. Keep going.”

“I thought I was a goner. I was a strong swimmer, even at that age, but being stuck in that current, you are kinda fucked, strong swimmer or not. I just stopped fighting and said my goodbyes, until a pair of hands pulled me free. They blew air into my lungs, like you said what happened to you and they pushed me to the surface. I took the biggest breath of my life and whoever saved me, pushed me toward shore, and a wave carried me the rest of the way. When I made it back to where you were swimming, no one was the wiser that I had been stuck and almost died and I never said anything. I just thought it was a figment of my imagination. That I was nuts and half dead to have thought someone saved me. Do you know who did? Who it was? Since that day, I have felt like I wasn’t whole. Like there is someone out there for me. That is just mine. I don’t understand why.”

Soraya smiled, “I don’t know who saved you specifically, but I can tell you that you are a special breed of human that is meant to be with a mermaid. Like Cruiz. Whoever saved you knew you were dying and didn’t want to lose their other half like that. Just like I did with Cruiz. Even at such a young age, mermaids know such things.”

Fin raised his eyebrow, “They do?”

Soraya smiled, “They absolutely do. I have a feeling you will find your mate rather soon. Do you feel the shift in the air? I know it.”

Fin shut his eyes as if in relief, “Thank heavens. I need her.”

Soraya felt her heart grow for her new brother, “Fin, you are a good man, and I apologize for not being able to tell you all when we first met. It wasn’t time yet. Cruiz and I had to mate first and now that we have, you are my family now. Feel free to ask all, I will do my best to answer your questions.”

Fin smiled, “You saved Cruiz?”

She nodded, “I did.”

“Good. And you can speak to the animals?”

“I can. It’s an ability mermaids have.”

That made him smile, “Are you staying with us here? Or are you and Cruiz leaving?”

Soraya touched Fin’s hand, “I will be wherever my mate is. I wish to stay here and help you in your endeavors.”

Fin grinned, “That’s good news.”

Soraya smiled, “Though Cruiz and I will visit my family for a little while. They need to know I’m happy. Though I’m pretty sure my mother already knows.”

Cruiz held his hand out to her, “Come Gem. Let’s get things squared away so we can visit tomorrow.”

She changed back to her legs and Fin turned his back while she climbed from the pool.

Cruiz wrapped her in a towel and led her away, while Fin laughed and went to feed the baby.

Chapter Eight

Cruiz

Putting Soraya in his bed while he made sure everything was shut and locked, he came over to where she sat, and picked up her hands, kissing the back of them. “Do you have any idea who saved Fin? He never said a word about that day.”

Soraya nodded, “I believe so. My sister is just a little older than me by a few minutes. Mother told me that she and I are quite similar, but also so very different. And while I hid my gifts and was afraid of who I was and the power I wielded, Ulyana has always accepted who she was. She is kind and wonderful and she told my mother one day about a young boy that had been caught in an undercurrent. It would have ended badly and she had saved him without a second thought. I had no idea it was Fin though. What are the chances?”

Cruiz smiled, “She must have known. Do you think Fin is her mate?”

Soraya laughed, “If she is, I wouldn’t be shocked. Ulyana is really wonderful. She looks a lot like me, and I know that they would get along great.”

Cruiz smiled and pulled her into his arms, “Fin is a great guy. Your sister would be so lucky.”

Soraya kissed him, “I don’t really wish to speak about my sister, or your brother right now.”
