And after she calmed, and the merpeople came out to see the damage, she was met with scared looks and hostility from the families who had lost their men.
She didn’t know that it would hurt so many and the men who had died in the incident had families that mourned their loss keenly.
In all of their tribes, only Destan and Tridenton, were able to control the waves above, but they always needed their trident at their side, and the fact that Soraya was so young and had the ability to control the waves, and not use a trident, scared not only herself, but many others.
Soraya stayed silent from that moment on, her heart and soul too hurt from knowing she caused such anger and fighting between her tribe's men that they had died, and because of the major storm afterwards that also took lives.
She became an outcast, unaccepted by anyone after that incident, even though her mother and father were the king and queen of the ocean.
They tried hard to get everyone over their fears of her, but nothing they tried worked.
There were rumors spread, scaring everyone who lived in different tribes. Fright was a powerful emotion that made people unable to look at her as anything other than the mermaid who hurt people with her song.
She often was left to her own devices because of this, and didn’t call any unnecessary attention to herself.
Ulyana hated it. Her twin sister took it on herself to be Soraya’s protector and the person who would get angry at anyone who bothered her, but eventually, Ulyana had to stop, because Soraya had accepted that no one wanted her around and Ulyana finally let it go.
Soraya was tired of the ridicule, and the judgements and as soon as she hit her maturity, she left the tribe to live alone.
The females didn’t want to be her friend, none of the males in her tribe were her mate which she wasn’t truly sad over, and she didn’t like being the outcast any longer.
She would rather live in a cave than alone in a tribe full of people. So she did just that.
Her mother, father, brother and sister did their best to discourage her from leaving. Ulyana struggled the most with her decision, even knowing that she was so unhappy there and hurt from something she hadn’t meant to cause, that they all eventually let it go.
She knew it was far safer for her to live away from everyone else than to ever influence anyone again.
They came to visit as often as they were able and Soraya always looked forward to seeing them.
She was so lonely, and would sing very quietly to the small fish and other animals that came near, speaking to them with her songs.
Knowing deep inside her that even a Siren couldn’t fully give up her song.
She wanted nothing more than to find her mate and live her life happy, but was afraid of hurting anyone else with her singing.
Even though she knew her true mate wouldn’t be affected by her song, she was too scared to venture out of her safe world to find him, so she let the dreams of him die.
Or she tried to anyway. Except that night after night, she would have the same, strange, vivid dream of a man with dark hair, dark eyes and light brown skin.
He was kind, gentle, had a good heart, and cared about the animals of the sea. And he had the mark of a Protector on his chest.
She had no idea who he was, and why she kept seeing his face when she slept, but she needed to speak with her mother about it.
She went about her day, catching her food, finding and making medicines from the plants that grew beside her cave.
She was also doing her best to take care of a small dolphin calf that had been abandoned by its mother.
She was struggling though and knew that she would need help with the small creature if it was to survive.
She was trying to find small fish for the baby to eat, when her mother swam up to her cave.
“Soraya, how is my daughter this day?” Marit reached out and hugged her and Soraya hugged her mother back gratefully.
“I am well, but I found a small calf that had been abandoned by its mother. Which is so unheard of that I still don’t know how it happened. It won’t really eat and I know it needs milk, but I don’t know how to help it.”
Marit let out a soft sigh of sadness, “Poor thing. I can try to summon a pod of dolphins for you to see if that would help.”
Soraya nodded, “Anything we can do to save her life, I will try. Thank you mother.”
