Soraya shut her eyes again, she wanted to believe what her mother was saying, but so far had no faith in it.
She also didn’t want to tell her mother that she had a feeling the key to all of it was the man from her dreams, but she didn’t know how to find him.
When she opened them, her mother was looking at her strangely and Soraya knew that she must have projected her thoughts loudly enough that her mother had heard them.
Marit and Ulyana could hear the thoughts of others if the person was open to it, and they could both read the future of that mermaid or merman.
Her mother was quite adept at it, but Soraya had always been able to block her thoughts from her mother.
Not today apparently.
Marit pulled back from her, “Darling, have you been having dreams?”
Soraya nodded, “Yes. All mermaids do.”
Marit tsked her tongue, “No love, I mean have you had dreams of a man? They were so strong I've seen a peek of them when you shut your eyes. You may not even have to sing to call to the man who is meant for you.”
“What do I do?”
Marit looked her in the eyes, “There is only one thing you can do my love. Find him. He seems to be the one who can tame your magic and can help you.”
“He can? Truly?” She asked in a quiet voice and thought over her dreams once again, this time letting her mother see the man she had seen over and over.
“Oh my darling gem. He is a kind one, isn’t he? So unspoiled by the hurt and anger of the world. He is exactly the man for you. And it seems you need to find him amongst the humans. Just as I thought. I will tell your father. He'll be accepting of whoever can bring you back to us.”
Soraya hugged her mother and they touched their foreheads together. Their same colored hair swirled around them.
Marit kissed her head softly, “Remember all you have been taught about humans, and that we love you. No matter what.”
Her mother touched her cheek, “Also, you know the rules that you cannot stay on land constantly. You have to get your tail back sometime during each day for even a small space of time, or it will be painful for you. You also only have a fortnight before the magic is gone for good, and you won’t have your legs again for another year.”
Soraya remembered all of the rules, but had never had legs before as it never seemed like something she wanted to do, and was nervous to find out how to use them.
Her mother went on, “Find him love. He has a good soul, and a good heart. He is the perfect man for you. The one who is meant to give you the world.”
Soraya bit her lip and her mother gave her a nudge, “Take the calf along when you go. You may be able to find a pod that will take her in. I have faith this will be.”
Soraya hugged her mother once more, “I will do my best to come back soon, thank you for always being there for me. For not giving up on me.”
Marit kissed her head again, “Of course darling. Swim now. Find your love and then come back to us, the mermaid you were always meant to be.”
Soraya gathered a few of her belongings and the small calf, and swam away, waving to her mother once more.
Hope in her heart for the first time in her life.
Chapter One
Soraya
She swam for a few hours, unsure of where she would start her search for her mate, but she felt a pull toward a beach in the far, far, distance.
She knew that somehow this must be where she would find her soulmate, and she took a minute to just breathe.
Reveling in the knowledge that she was about to meet her mate.
But the further she swam, the worse the water got. It was choppy, full of bubbles and it was hard to see through.
The light had all but faded and she looked up, trying to see the surface of the water, to gage what was happening, and noticed the lightning forking above her, in bright lights, and the waves roaring, becoming massive walls of water high above.
