She shut her eyes in relief and when she opened them, he had his eyes open as well.
She tried her best not to shrink back in fear from him, but as soon as she looked into his eyes, she knew that he was hers.
His eyes were dark brown, and they had so much kindness in them, that she moved back to where she was before at his side.
His eyes were dazed and he had blood pouring down his face from a cut above one eye.
“Are you alright?” She asked softly, and he gave a small nod, “My head hurts, but I’m alright. I don’t understand how I got here though.”
She searched his eyes, “You washed up here on the beach.”
He raised his eyebrow like it didn’t seem to make sense to him, “I was miles from shore. When that wave capsized my boat, I dove into the water at the last minute and some of the debris hit me in the head. I was knocked out and then the next thing I know I’m on the beach? No. Something pulled me from the water.”
She blinked at him, “I just found you here.”
He pinched the bridge of his nose as if he was frustrated and didn’t understand what was going on.
She couldn’t tell him yet that she saved him. And she hated it.
But even though she knew he was her mate, he had no idea about merpeople and her world. It could scare him away and she didn’t want that. So for now, she would keep quiet.
He shook his head, “I am grateful you found me. I need to reach my brother. I radioed that the storm got really bad, that our boat most likely wouldn’t make it back and that was it. He probably thinks I died.”
She felt a wave of concern flow over her, “Can I help you find him?”
He looked around and stood, his legs were shaky and he swayed on his feet before holding a hand to his head.
The blood was flowing free from his cut still and the rain made it run in small red rivers down to the white shirt on his chest.
He turned in a small circle as if looking for something and when he found what he was looking for, he took a step in that direction, and then turned, as if just remembering she was there.
“Aren’t you coming with me?”
She bit her lip, “I, um, I don’t know how.”
He gave her a confused look, “Okay?”
She tried to move her legs to stand, but they were heavy and unwieldy and she didn’t like them.
He hurried to her side, and went down on one knee beside her, and he helped her sit up in the water, but as his eyes tracked down her body, he noticed that she was only wearing her shells and her tail had left her with a small pair of panty type underwear covering her.
His face went pink and he looked away and she looked down, not understanding his reluctance.
“Did you lose your bottoms when you found me?”
She still didn’t understand, but nodded and he ripped his shirt off his head, and put it over hers.
He helped put her arms through the sleeves and she looked up at him in shock.
“There. You're covered. Mostly. Um, can you stand?”
She tried to stand on her shaky legs, and managed it, but the first step she took, she went down, and he very gently reached under her legs and scooped her into his arms, against his very warm, very solid chest.
She let out a squeak and wrapped her arms around his neck, afraid he would drop her.
He gave a small chuckle, “I have you. It’s okay.”
She nodded, and he walked slowly to oceans knew where and when they got to a structure on the beach that had large pools of water around them, he let out a sigh of relief.
