Prologue

~ Jet Cannon ~

Having the name Jet Cannon was either the best thing ever or the worst. Depending on the day. Most of the time he got asked if that was actually his name, or if it was just a nickname. And he would patiently tell people that it was his real name and that his dad, who served as a pilot in the Air Force, named him that.

His dad who was now a pilot for a big-name company also named his brother, Bowing. They just called him Bo. And their little sister was named Aria Sky.

No joke.

People often told their dad he was insane for naming his children after his job, their dad would just lift his eyebrow and wait for them to stop talking, then he would patiently explain that they were his children, and he was able to name them whatever he wanted.

His mom would roll her eyes, but then she would step up beside him and let them know that she had approved of his choice, and they loved their children’s names. People stopped asking after that.

His mother had the patience of a saint and went along with her husband’s crazy. They had regular names, although their last name was loud and crazy. His dad was John William Cannon, and his mom was Gwen Mary Cannon.

They met when John was on leave and sitting at a bar. They were both twenty-one and John was head over heels in love with Gwen from the first sight. Gwen took a minute. She knew he was in the military and hadn’t wanted that life. It took John all of five minutes to convince her though, and it worked out.

Gwen moved around the country following John in his career as a pilot and held down the fort when he was deployed. Jet was always in awe of his mother and how strong she was. How she never wavered and did everything without help most of the time.

He saw how in love his parents were. Whenever his dad got home from leave, his mom was the first to get a hug and kiss. Then he would hug the kids. But the kids saw that his wife was always his first priority. Jet wanted that in his life too. A woman and a love like that.

He had seen plenty of beautiful girls in life, but they only wanted what he could give them.Everyone wanted to get on his good side, since his dad was a pilot, and they could fly all the time for free. Everyone wanted a piece of the pie it seemed, and Jet was tired of people using him for that and for the money his dad made.

It wasn’t a secret that they were well off. Though they didn’t throw it around like most would. But his friends didn’t know how hard it was having his dad gone all the time and how hard Jet worked to try to not be under his dad’s shadow.

How he wanted to show that he was more than just his dad’s son. That he was worthy. That he was a computer genius. No one knew that small detail though. He could and did hack into more than one computer. The school’s computer had the worst firewall to keep people out.

He once changed a few grades of some people even though he knew it was wrong. He just couldn’t deal with knowing that they would fail over something stupid. So he stepped in, all without anyone knowing.

He was busy with school and with getting enough flight time so he could get his pilot’s license. He finished up with school and earned his pilot’s license. But he didn’t want to become a pilot like his dad. He wanted a new experience in life, so he chose to join the Navy.

He wanted to have his life mean something and though his dad wanted him to join the Air Force, Jet wanted to make a name for himself and not follow in his dad’s footsteps. His parents were proud of his choice and on his first day there, he knew he had made the right choice.

He kept the fact that he was a genius with math and numbers and things like that a secret. He had a good record and his dad helped him earn his pilot license right after he turned eighteen. It helped a lot and the Navy took notice. He was ready for anything they threw at him.It didn’t hurt that he was a genius with numbers and that he already had his pilot’s license.

He was ahead of the curve there. He was in the Navy for a year learning how to fly F-22s and when he became a pilot, they asked him to try out for the SEALs and Jet was grateful. He did his best to hide the fact that he was a computer genius, but Crew and Scout found out and then Steele saw how quickly he was able to do things with anything technology related.

They all agreed to keep it under their hats though. He met the best men in the SEALs. Men that became his family. And with each mission they went on, they went from friends to brothers. They knew everything about the other and Jet loved that they were so similar in a lot of ways.

Jet knew that each of his friends hadn’t really dated much, and he liked that. That they had that in common. He knew a lot of soldiers who fucked anything that moved when they were on leave and who had families at home waiting for them, but who had girlfriends while they were deployed. Jet wasn’t about that life. He saw the misery it caused and how the men thought they were invincible since their significant others were so far away. But it was bound to blow up in their face and he saw it more than once. So he stuck to himself and to his Platoon.

In his spare time, he made a computer program that helped them on their missions. He would put in their coordinates of where they would go and map out their entire mission. It helped them to know exactly where things were and when they were on their missions, it was like peace of mind. He knew that not everything could be accounted for and with him and Crew working together, they did their best. Some things still went wrong though. When they were out on a mission, he and Crew were flying a helicopter and it almost got shot down.

The bullets were flying, and he watched in horror as they hit a piece of the floor, and the debris flew in all directions, hitting Crew on his leg, and slicing it open. It was deep and the blood fell free quickly. Crew’s face showed none of the pain though as he did his best to keep the helicopter steady and to get out of shooting range. Jet helped as much as he could and when they were able to bring the helicopter around and back to base without anyone dying, it was a big thing. The soldiers swarmed their helicopter and Crew was taken to the infirmary in seconds. He, Scout and Steele watched as he was taken away and Jet wanted to slide to the ground with relief. He waited until he got back to the bunks with Scout, and he collapsed on his bed and had to just breathe.

That had been too close. They had almost died, and Jet thanked his lucky stars that they hadn’t. Scout came in a few seconds after he had and sat down on the end of his bed. When Jet looked at his friend, Scout’s hands were shaking.

“That was fucking close. Holy shit. I saw my damn life flash before my eyes. It wasn’t that impressive.”

Jet sat up, “Mine wasn’t either.”

Scout ran a hand over his short blond hair. “I wish that I could change that. That there was something that I could look forward to.”

Jet shook his head, “There is. One day I have a feeling there are good things meant for us.”

Scout looked at him dubiously, “That’s easy for you to say. You have a family at home. One that didn’t disown you.”

Jet nodded, “I know I do. But you are as much my family as they are. Same with Crew and Steele. You know this Scout. We won’t abandon you as soon as we leave the SEALs. That’s not what brothers do.”
