Rowen looked in her rearview mirror and checked over her shoulder, and Farren put her seatbelt back on and then Rowen pulled back onto the road. As they drove to the small shopping center in town, Farren was glad that Rowen was doing better. She hated that Rowen had to deal with that. That her mother was so horrible that Rowen was in tears. That her mother would use Raegan to get Rowen to do anything she wanted. What kind of a mother would treat their children like that?

Farren shook off her anger and enjoyed the day with Rowen. When they left the mall, it was dark, and the snow was slowly falling. They hurried to Rowen’s car and shivered as they sat in the cold. Rowen pulled out of the parking lot and started driving back to Farren’s house. But as they were going down a winding road, a car drove up behind them, riding so close to their bumper it scared them both, and the person was driving way too fast for the conditions.

Rowen kept glancing at the mirror and her face grew more concerned.

“Do I pull over? He is right up my butt practically. Geez. Whoever is behind us is crazy. Don’t they know that’s how wrecks happen?”

But before she could finish her sentence the person hit into the car and slammed them both forward. Farren hit her head on the window, and it cracked when she did. The airbags hadn’t gone off and Farren felt a sticky warmth slide down her face. Their car lurched forward as the person hit the car again and then it spun as it hit a patch of ice on the road. Rowen screamed as the car turned in a circle and then the tire caught, and the car rolled three times down a small embankment before landing on the hood. The airbags had blown, and Farren blinked rapidly.

“Rowen? Are you okay?”

Rowen let out a whimper and Farren turned her head and saw that Rowen had blood coming from her nose and a cut on her eye. She also must have cut her head somewhere, as her hair was getting slick. Farren blinked the blood out of her own eyes and knew she broke at least one rib from the seatbelt and her wrist hurt. As did one of her legs.

“We need to call for help.”

Rowen nodded slightly, “I think my phone is in my coat. I can probably reach it.”

She let out a groan as she did and Farren went still, “Are you okay?”

Rowen nodded, “I think so. Just my back hurts. So does my neck.”

Farren looked at her, “Don’t move your neck if you can help it. We don’t know if you broke it.”

Rowen’s eyes went wide and then they filled with tears.

“I’m scared Farren.”

“I am too.”

She looked around for her purse and saw that her phone had fallen on the floor in front of Rowen, and Farren tried to reach for it, but she was stuck fast.

Then they heard someone moving outside the car and Rowen gasped as Farren’s door was wrenched open forcefully. Farren let out a scream as her seatbelt was cut free and then she was in a pair of hands before she hit the roof of the car. She was pulled from the car and when she was on her feet, she looked up at her rescuer. His face and hair were covered, but she could tell it was a man. His eyes were hooded, and she went to turn back to help Rowen when she was thrown over the guy’s shoulder. She started to kick and scream, but her injured leg started to throb and though she was running on adrenaline, it still hurt.

“Let me go. Please! I need to go to the hospital and my friend needs to too. Please!”

The man ignored her and then put her in a huge truck that was dented in the front, but still drove.

Farren could hear Rowen screaming her name behind her and Farren looked at the man, “Please don’t do this. Why are you doing this?”

He didn’t answer her and shut the door and then got in the driver's seat. He started the truck and then backed up and drove around the road where Rowen’s car had gone off the side of the road.

Farren felt the tears start to fall and she leaned against the door, “Who are you? Please take me back. I need to go to the hospital. I really hurt my leg and I think my rib is broken.”

The man pushed the scarf off his face and glared over at her, “Stop it Farren. I went to great lengths to get at you. I didn’t want to hurt you, but I hit some ice. I am sorry for leaving your friend, but you are important to me. Not her.”

Farren’s mouth dropped open, “Ted? Oh god. Please. Ted. I need to get back to her. And go to the hospital. I am not okay. You can’t take care of me like I need to be. Please Ted. You aren’t this man.”

Ted looked over at her, “I will take care of you. I can handle it.”

Farren shook her head, tears coursing down her cheeks, “You can’t. Please Ted. Rowen could die! Oh god. She could die!”

She clawed at the door and tried to open it, to get back to Rowen.

Ted growled, and she slapped his hands when he reached for her. “No! I need to get back to her!”

“I won’t let you. Just stop it Farren!”

She fought even harder, and he cursed as the truck fishtailed when she hit his arm and pushed at him. He slammed on the brakes, and she hit against the seat hard, jarring her broken rib.
