She nodded and his dad sighed, “Just take care of yourself. We are here to support you and love you. Okay?”
He smiled, “I will. I love you both.” They talked for a few more seconds, but Jet knew his time was up. He looked at Scout when his parents hung up the phone.
“Come on. I doubt we will sleep, but we have to try.” Scout nodded and they walked to the bunks.
Steele was there, pacing in his room. Jet knocked on the door casing and Steele looked up.
“Come in.”
He and Scout walked into Steele’s spotless room. He was still in the same clothes and it had flecks of red on his pants and some on his shirt.
“Are you okay?”
Steele gave a tight nod, “I’m fine.”
Jet raised one eyebrow and then shook his head, “Today was hard on all of us.”
Scout agreed, and Steele sighed, “I have seen battles before you. Have been hit before with a bullet. But today? It was like something out of a horror film. We weren’t even in the battle zone. And we still almost got shot from the sky. It shouldn’t have happened.”
Jet nodded, “It shouldn’t have. But it was the other side. Their choice was to shoot us down. And they almost succeeded.”
Steele sat down hard on his bed, “I have never been more scared in my life than I was today.”
“I agree there. Everything went wrong that shouldn’t have gone wrong.”
Steele looked up at him, “I know we went over every single aspect of this mission with a fine-tooth comb, but it still came out of nowhere. Are you all certain you are okay?”
Scout and Jet both nodded, “We are fine.”
Steele stood, “You are my brothers now. As is Crew. I hated that he got hurt. And that we almost lost our lives today.”
He put a hand on each of their shoulders, “I am glad that we are all okay. And from here on out, we aren’t just going to go over it with a fine-tooth comb, we are going to plan each and every second we are out in the field and everything that can go wrong.”
Jet nodded, “We can do that.”
After that, they did just that. Jet did better models of their missions. They went over each and every possibility that could occur in combat and when they were out and even ones that seemed impossible. But it made Steele feel better, so Jet was happy with that. They did the best they could with the knowledge they had and they were able to leave without any other injuries.
When Crew got back, he was on board with everything they were doing, and Jet was grateful to have his other brother back in the line of duty with them. When it was time to re-enlist, none of the men wanted to do that. Jet was content with his time in the service and when they got back to the States, he was so happy to see his family. They were all there at the airport and when he got off the plane. His mom ran for him first and he wrapped his arms around her so tightly he lifted her off the ground.
She cried against his neck and when she calmed a little, he was able to put her down and then hug his father and brother. Then Aria was in his arms next. She cried and cried and wouldn’t let him put her down. John held onto her crutches and Jet carried Aria out of the airport. She finally let him go when they got to the car and she held his hand the entire way home. Jet loved being back with his family again. He missed them. But when Scout came to visit and asked about the opportunity to start up a security company, Jet jumped at the opportunity.
He wanted nothing more than to make something of his life. He knew he could help with all of the tech and he didn’t know what else to do. Yes, he could fly planes, but this was something else. This called to him and he followed the call.
Chapter One
~ Jet ~
After being part of the security company for a few years, they had a crazy few months. First with Gunner’s building being robbed of some really important plans. It rubbed Jet the wrong way that the man had somehow made it that far without setting off a single red flag.
He had cameras in the building for a reason. But, where the man came during the day, and walked inside without being questioned, Jet knew something had to change. So he worked on the new tech to change it. To approve only those that Gunner and his assistant Miles allowed up. They had to go through a more rigorous process to get in the building and Jet wasn’t taking second chances. And he was working on the new tech for the bank. The owner wanted it to be the latest tech and Jet was doing all he could to live up to the reputation that was bestowed on them.
But he never thought that the bank would be robbed while he was working to make it unable to be robbed. It was eye opening, and Jet spent the next few days doing all he could to make the bank even safer. He refused to let it happen again.
At least they stopped the robbery in its tracks, so it helped with their reputation. The bank owner was impressed that they stopped the robbery even though they hadn’t finished with their tech job. He paid them extra for it and Jet didn’t hate that bonus. Steele wasn’t thrilled though. But he met his girl. It had been a shock to all of them. Jet had never once seen Steele even look at a woman. And he was serious all the time.
So when he came into work one day and he was whistling it was the weirdest day ever. Crew almost fell over in shock and he and Scout had their jaws dropped to the floor. They hadn’t been expecting Steele’s girl either. She was Raiden Daniels little sister, Rickie. She was a beautiful girl with a good heart and Jet was happy for them both. And not long after Steele met his girl, that Crew’s sister and the girl he was in love with came to visit. But Crew said he was going to stay as far from her as possible. That she was already taken. Jet hated the defeated look on his friend’s face, but he knew it would work out.
He knew there was more that Crew didn’t know and when his girl came into the building with him, Jet grinned.
