When he walked into Farren’s room, he immediately went to her side. Her leg was bandaged and was supported on the bed by a few pillows. Her arm was also in a sling, and she had some stitches covered by a white bandage on her face. She had a bruise on her cheek the size of a hand and Jet felt the anger rise in him again.

He wanted to kill Ted and wished he had. Farren was in this mess because of Ted. Jet had to breathe again and get himself under control. Anger wouldn’t help Farren now. He gently picked up her hand and brought it to his mouth, kissing her fingers and the back of her hand. Her mother had insisted he go inside alone for a bit and he was grateful to her. He pulled the chair that was by her bed a little closer and sat down in it, still holding her hand.

“I’m so sorry Farren. For not finding you sooner.”

He coughed slightly and cleared his throat. “You are the love of my life. I need you to live and to spend the rest of your life with me. To have a life with me. I want to see you round with our babies and to raise them side by side. I want to see us send them to school and cry as they do all the things we prepared them for, but secretly didn’t want them to do and I want to grow old with you. To see the gray hairs in your hair as you grow more beautiful year by year. I need you Farren. More than the next beat of my heart. More than my next breath. Please. Please.”

He put his head on her hand and knelt beside her bed. He felt a tear slide free and wiped it away angrily. He would stay in this moment with her. He could break down later. Right now she needed his strength. He stayed on the cold floor and pressed occasional kisses to Farren’s hand. When the door opened, he gently lifted his head and stared right at his girl.

He felt someone come up behind him and he stood, not letting go of her hand.Someone touched his back and Jet looked over at Emerson.

“You are trying to be strong, but you don’t have to be. It’s just you and me in here. I can see how hard this is on you.”

He shook his head, “She needs me to be strong.”

Emerson’s face filled with so much compassion, Jet had to look away. She touched his hand softly, “Even if you give into your feelings, you are still strong. I’m sure seeing her like this isn’t easy. I know it isn’t for me.”

Jet cleared his throat, “It isn’t. I hate that she is in any kind of pain. I never want to see her like this. Knowing that I could have tried to help her. Or something.”

Emerson nodded, “I know. I feel the same. Seeing my daughter in a bed like this is something no mother wants to see.”

Jet looked at Farren and shut his eyes in pain for her. Then he opened them again.

“I just need her to get well. So that we can have the future we want.”

Emerson smiled, “I want that too. Her father and brothers never let her date. Never let her have a life and protected her from so much. I appreciate it, but she missed out on a lot. I used to be angry about it, but I know it was better for her. Because she never had to be subjected to evil men. Like Ted. She only gets to see what it’s like to be treated like a queen. That was all my husband and sons ever wanted for her. They never thought anyone was good enough for her. And it was because she hadn’t found you.”

Jet turned to look down at her and Emerson’s smile widened. “I mean every word I say. She is so lucky to have a man like you. You are so much like my Garrett. And I am so glad that she has someone like you to fight for her. To protect her and to love her like she deserves to be loved. I will never take that for granted.”

She hugged him again and Jet put his arm gently around Emerson.

“I will always give her the world.”

Emerson nodded and kissed his cheek and then let him go, “I would expect nothing less.”

Then she kissed Farren’s cheek and brushed her hair off her forehead softly.

“I’m going to give you a few more minutes.”

Then she walked from the room and Jet sat back down in the chair beside Farren’s bed. He stayed by her side the entire day and when everyone else left, aside from Emerson, -who curled up in a chair on the far side of Farren’s room-, and him he was able to breathe.

He put his head down on Farren’s bed and sighed.

He still had Farren’s hand in his and shut his eyes as the stress and worry of the day finally faded. It was dark out when he felt Farren’s hand leave his and he sat up, looking around. The room was bright enough with the light from the moon shining in and he looked to see if a nurse was taking Farren’s pulse.

But no one was in the room, aside from Emerson, who slept peacefully. When a finger gently touched his hand, he looked down at Farren and was shocked to see her eyes open.

“Jet? Hi.”

He blinked a few times before smiling and then leaning forward and kissing her lips softly.

“Hi baby. How are you feeling?”

She adjusted slightly on the bed, and winced, “I’m okay. A little sore and so tired.”

He cupped her face gently, “That is to be expected.”

She looked around the room, “Why am I in a hospital room?”
