Sure she was beautiful in her mind, but men looked over her. Saw her sister instead and didn't give her a second look.

And with how sexy Gage was, she knew he had to have women lined up for him. Or he was already taken.

She shut her eyes at that thought and how badly it hurt her and she opened them and washed her hands and got cleaned up so she could make him some food.

He was injured and needed help.

She quickly heated up some of the dinner she had made earlier and turned to bring it to him, but squeaked in alarm when she almost ran into him instead.

He hadn't put his shirt back on, but had apparently cleaned the blood off his skin and had washed his hands as well.

He looked down at her and she barely came to his shoulder and she swallowed and gestured to the table and to the plate of food she held.

“I was just coming to bring this to you.”

He sat down at the small table and she set the plate in front of him.

His lips lifted on the very edges and she swallowed hard and then sat down next to him.

She looked down at her fingers and then cleared her throat, “So, um. What do you do for a living?”

He went still as he was lifting the fork to his mouth.

“You don’t want to know the answer to that question.”

“Oh. Okay. Are you married?”

He let out a soft huff, “Nope. I don’t look at women.”

Her eyebrows raised, and he looked at her, and then back at his food, “Are you single?”

She laughed, “I have never even been on a date. Most men believe I’m broken.”

He set his fork down, “Why would anyone think you are broken?”

She smiled and shook her head, “I had heart issues when I was younger. And that scares men. And I believe that if that can scare them so easily, I don’t want to waste my time.”

He nodded and ate all the food on his plate. Then he stood, “I really need to get going.”

She nodded, “Oh. Okay. Please be safe.”

“Thank you for helping me.”

She felt bereft, thinking this would be the last time she saw him. She knew she was insane for those kinds of thoughts.

He was dangerous and powerful. And no one to be toyed with. He needed to get back to his life and she had to get back to hers. They were too different and he most likely wouldn’t want a girl like her anyway.

She had made up a fantasy in her head and knew it was insane to think the thoughts she was thinking and she had to shut them down.

She knew she hadn’t been this close with a man before and she chalked it up to that.

She had to keep herself busy and took the plate from the table and brought it into the kitchen, and then went to turn, but felt his warmth covering her back.

He leaned down and with his mouth against her ear, she sucked in her breath and held it, “You aren’t broken Honor. You are far from it. You are so beautiful it hurts to look at you. And if I could have someone so perfect as you, I would be happy for the rest of my life.”

Then he was gone and she turned slowly, watching him walk out the door.

She sank to the floor in the kitchen and blinked hard against the tears in her eyes.
