She gave each one a treat and then a girl walked into the room with Gage and he turned to her when she said, “Can I help you with something?”

Gage shook his head and Honor looked up and her eyes went wide and a smile broke over her face, “He is with me Jaycee.”

The girl lifted an eyebrow and then nodded and Gage walked over to the half-wall that separated them.

The dogs followed behind her and Gage looked down at Honor, he felt foolish and wanted to leave, but she smiled again and put her hand on his arm, “What are you doing here?”

He looked down at her hand, shocked once again that he allowed her to touch him.

He hated people touching him. It literally rubbed him the wrong way, but her touch soothed something in him that had been bristling since Renee died.

“I sort of followed you.”

Shock covered her face and then her cheeks went pink and she bit her lip softly.

“Do you want to meet some of the dogs? Or the cats? That’s what I’m here for. To pet the dogs and play with the cats.”

He nodded and she looked at his suit, “You may get dirty.”

He shrugged, “That’s what I pay dry cleaning for.”

She grinned and then showed him where to open the gate.

Some of the dogs rushed him right away and he very gently patted them as they came up to him.

Some of the dogs seemed wary of him and he gave them a wide berth.

Honor walked over to one of the dogs who had stayed in the corner.

She slid down the wall slowly and sat near him, but not right next to him, and Gage sat down and fought to hold in a laugh as some of the dogs rushed over to him, climbing all over him and licking his face.

He petted the dogs and watched as Honor pulled some treats from her pocket and placed them close to the dog that was cowering from her.

The dog didn’t look at the treats at first. He was a gray weimaraner and he was a gorgeous dog.

He just cowered and Honor smiled over at Gage, “This is Rebel. He is really shy and was abused. So, he is really hesitant about people. I have been working with him for a few weeks to get to trust humans. This is the first day he has been out with the other dogs. I think he is overwhelmed.”

The girl looked over the barrier, “Do you want me to put the dogs back? Just for a little bit?”

Honor nodded and Jaycee smiled and then Gage stood and did what he could to help her.

Honor stayed back and he watched in awe as she slowly fed Rebel some treats.

Rebel got closer to her with each treat and then he took one gently from Honor’s hand as she held perfectly still.

She grinned when Rebel ate the treat and Honor very gently rubbed Rebel’s head.

He cowered a little, but allowed her to pet him once and then he retreated to the corner again.

Honor looked up at him and she grinned, “That was the closest he has ever come.”

Gage felt his lips lift at the corners and walked over to Honor after Jaycee led Rebel back to the kennels.

She smiled up at him, “That was the best thing ever.”

He couldn’t help it, he smiled and hers fell and he felt his drop off his lips.

“What’s wrong?”
