He and Renee had a close bond and he told her everything and she told him everything.

Now he had no one. Nothing.

He felt the cup slip from his fingers and knew the juice splashed up his legs and all over the floor, but he didn't care.

His best friend was gone. And he finally let the tears fall.

He sat on that chair and sobbed, these harsh heart wrenching sobs until his parents came over after he didn’t know how long, and they both surrounded him and hugged him.

He turned his face into his mother's neck and she cried with him.

He knew it wasn't okay. That it would never be okay.

They sat in the hospital for a few more hours and Gage remembered hearing his mom say that Renee would have wanted to help those who needed it and he didn't know what she meant.

Her mom nodded and said, "I wish that she was still with us."

Gage just sat there and she squeezed his hand, "It will be fine. Eventually."

Gage nodded, knowing she wasn't right, but not knowing what to say.

When they were allowed to see Renee, she was covered with a sheet and her face was pale.

Her hair was brushed out of her face and Gage felt his stomach lurch into his throat.

He turned away from the room and found the nearest garbage can and threw up every single thing that was in his stomach and then some.

He squeezed his eyes shut and then with a gentle nudge from his father, he stood and walked back to the room.

His mother was gently running her fingers over Renee’s hair and kissing her forehead and Gage had to bite back the harsh tears that threatened his vision.

He walked to her side and his mom moved over so that he could touch Renee’s hand.

It was cold and he hated that. Hated that she was taken from them in the blink of an eye.

He looked at his parents, who were holding each other tightly and his mom was crying into his dad’s shoulder.

Gage leaned down and kissed Renee’s forehead and put his own to his sisters, much like they used to when they were younger.

“I will always love you. And I will always miss you.”

Then with one last kiss, he turned away and let his parents say their good-byes.

When they left, Gage sat in the back of the car, his head to the cool glass and shut his eyes.

He didn’t know how to live in a world without his sister.

Didn’t even ever think about it. And now it was reality.

How he hated it.

He opened his eyes when the car stopped and he went inside the house and to his room and shut the door and slid down it.

He had no strength to make it to his bed.

It was all gone. He slumped to the floor and cried. And every time he shut his eyes to get some sleep, all he saw was Renee and her body as it flew through the air.

He could hear the thud of her body hitting the ground as well and he curled up into a ball and shoved his fingers in his ears and rocked back and forth.
