Honor nodded, “I know that, but he didn’t delve into it more. He is kind of quiet. He doesn’t reveal much about himself.”

“I see. Well, I don’t know him, but from what you have told me, -which isn’t a lot, thanks for that,- he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to make up lies about you. I have a feeling there is more to the story.”

Honor shook her head, “I heard him.”

Truth sighed, “You may have heard his side, but you didn’t hear the other. He could have a reason.”

Honor sat up, “You are supposed to be on my side.”

Truth hugged her, “I am. I swear I am. I just don’t want you to throw away your chance at happiness on an assumption.”

Honor glared at her, “It’s not just an assumption.”

A knock sounded at the front door and Truth looked over at her bedroom door, “Who is here? I thought we were closed until tomorrow?”

Honor nodded, “I put a sign on the front door.”

Truth smiled, “I will go see who it is.”

Honor grabbed her arm, “What if it’s Gage?”

Truth smiled, “Then I will talk to him and find out what happened.”

Honor shook her head, “No. I don’t want to see him.”

Truth patted her hand, “You don’t have to.”

Then she was gone and Honor bit her thumbnail, and then she got off the bed and started pacing.

Back and forth, back and forth until she could take it no longer and then walked down the stairs and to the wall that separated their apartment from the shop.

She heard Gage’s deep voice, “I swear to you that I never wanted to hurt her. I wanted to protect her. She is the most precious thing in my world and I will do everything to keep her safe. No matter what. My life isn’t perfect, I am not good enough for her. Not by a long shot. But for the first time in as long as I can remember, I have been at peace. And I need her. Need her light to quell the darkness in my heart. She keeps it at bay. Without her, I’m nothing.”

Truth answered, “She told me how badly you hurt her. She has been protected and taken care of her whole life because of her heart issues. Did she tell you about that?”

Honor looked out and saw Gage nod, “She told me that she had them when she was younger. But that was it.”

Truth lifted an eyebrow, “She is new to dating. And I know that you have to be someone important if you got her to even take another look. I just don’t want her to get hurt because of your past.”

Gage pinched the bridge of his nose, “I know. I don’t want her hurt either.”

Truth looked up at him, and Honor could see that she was watching him, “You are not what I was expecting.”

Gage let his nose go and looked down at Truth, “I don’t know what to say to that.”

Truth smiled, “Will you tell me why you feel your heart is black and why Honor’s sunshine makes it change?”

Gage squeezed his eyes shut, “My sister died when we were fifteen. She got hit by a car and I saw the entire thing happen. I felt my heart die that day. Knew it was beating to keep me alive, but I was only going through the motions. I didn’t care about anything or anyone. I am not a good man. But the second I saw Honor, my heart came alive again. I haven’t felt like this since Renee passed away.”

Truth had sucked in a breath and she shook her head, “Oh lord. Gage, I’m sorry.”

Honor put both of her hands to her mouth, and her heart hurt so badly for him.

Gage opened his eyes and Honor could see the pain in them.

“Renee was my younger sister by ten minutes. She was my world and it came crashing down when she died. I will always love her. And miss her. She was my sister. But I ache for Honor. She is my soul. She holds my heart in her hands and it is hers and only hers.”

Then he turned and left and Honor slid down the wall and wrapped her arms around her legs.
