When she turned to see them, her laugh stopped and her smile vanished, “Gage? Is that really you?”
Gage nodded and his throat felt thick. “Hi mom.”
She put her hands to her mouth and then she was throwing herself into his arms.
He caught her and held her close, feeling her sobbing in his arms.
He shut his eyes and put his head down against his mother’s hair and his eyes felt hot.
“Faye? What’s wrong?” His father’s voice sounded and Gage looked up when his father’s frame filled the front door.
His mom lifted her head and reached up to his face and cupped it. Her eyes were still filled with tears and they streaked down her face.
Gage smiled down at her and then looked back at his father, who hadn’t said a word.
Gage dropped his arms from around his mom and held a hand out to his dad, and his dad pulled him in for a hug, making sure that Faye was in their arms as well.
His parents held him tightly and when they let go, he felt his lips pull into a smile.
He looked over and Honor was there, smiling. She had her hands clasped together over her chest and he reached his hand out for her and she took it, “Mom, Dad, this is Honor. My girl. The love of my life.”
His mom gasped, and she rushed over and hugged Honor and Honor smiled even wider and hugged his mom back.
His dad hugged her too and then they gestured them both inside.
Gage held Honor close, taking a deep breath before walking in the house and it didn’t feel as suffocating now.
There were a few pictures of the family on the wall and of Renee, but they didn’t hurt like they had.
And Honor grinned when she saw them, rushing over to study each picture.
“Oh! You are adorable.”
Gage chuckled and two people walked into the living room and his eyes went wide when he saw his grandparents.
They rushed over to him, and hugged him and he chuckled as they did so.
When they pulled back, he introduced them to Honor, “These are my grandparents. Steven and Cathleen.”
Honor smiled and accepted the hugs from both of them and she kissed his grandma’s cheek and Gage smiled.
“This is Renee.”
Honor touched the picture of his sister that was taken just a few days before she died.
She was in dance and was amazing at it.
And she had just won a competition in her solo category and her face held so much joy and Gage remembered how proud he was of her.
She had rushed off the stage and he was waiting for her with a large bouquet of flowers that he had bought himself and had hugged her and she had grinned so wide, her face had to hurt.
It made him grin too and he was relieved that the memory didn’t bring the pain it used to.
He looked back at Honor and she leaned against him.
His parents and grandparents were sitting on the couches and his dad had brought in some chairs and Gage led Honor to one.
He cleared his throat, “I. Well, I wanted to come home and have you meet Honor. She is my life now. And she helped me break free from the anger that has been my constant companion since Renee died. Her light banished the darkness in my soul and I wish I had found her sooner.”
