He wasn’t living. Just surviving.
He started fighting at school and any time he heard of Chet and his band of bullies doing something to one of the kids that were smaller, Gage would rip Chet and his friends a new one.
He hated Chet more than life and once heard Chet mocking him and his sister.
Yeah. That wasn't going to fly with him and he beat Chet so badly, two teachers had to pull him off and he was suspended for a week.
His parents grounded him and wouldn't let him leave the house until he talked to them.
And they sent him to a therapist, but Gage didn't want to talk to them. He didn't want to talk to anyone.
When he graduated high school, he floundered for a while. He didn't want to go to college and didn't know what to do with his life.
And when his cousin, Sean, came to talk to him about joining the mob, Gage didn’t hesitate.
His dad tried to argue against him doing that. Telling him that he had worked too hard to get away from that.
That his older brother was the boss and wanted him to do unspeakable things.
And how he had refused.
So, he told his brother that he was done and wanted to move away.
But Gage knew that he couldn’t just go to college and pretend that everything was fine.
It hadn’t been fine since Renee died and it wouldn’t be fine again.
And he told his father that. That he would do what Sean wanted him to do and he wouldn’t regret it.
His dad cried that day, and Gage knew he was hurting his parents, but he didn’t care. He didn’t have it inside him to care anymore.
He knew how hard his parents worked to get away from that life, and the sacrifices they made so they could, but Gage needed violence like he needed air to breathe and Sean was offering him that outlet.
And while he would miss his parents, he also needed to get away from the memories and the fucking house that was suffocating him a little more each day with the memory of his sister.
So he joined Sean and didn’t look back.
He was Sean’s enforcer and it helped with his aggression. Just a little.
He didn’t mind taking his anger out on the men that owed Sean.
Sean didn’t mind it either. He worked hard to get everyone to respect him and Gage didn’t mind being the muscle.
He needed some kind of outlet and this was the best way.
He knew with each passing moment his soul shriveled up more and more and his heart turned black.
And he reveled in it.
