He was never letting her go and wouldn’t let anything happen to her if he could help it.

CHAPTER8

AVERY

After Bo had dropped her off, she went into the salon and turned everything on.

She sat in her chair and looked around, still shocked that she had only dreamed about him yesterday, and now?

Now he was real. She knew her cheeks were pink as she thought about all the things they had done last night and this morning.

She never thought that they would have such a connection and fall for each other so quickly.

Remembering some of the things they did last night and this morning made her smile and she looked at herself in the mirror as she bit her lip.

He was everything she had ever wanted in a man and everything she never knew she needed.

She heard the back door open and was expecting to see Kynlee, but it wasn’t just Kynlee.

It was her and West. The two of them making out like they hadn’t seen each other for years.

Her eyes went wide and she turned away from them, clearing her throat delicately.

She heard a soft groan and she turned back to see Kynlee pull away from West, “I have to work.”

He kissed down her neck and Avery’s face went pink, and she turned away again, as West pressed Kynlee up against the door frame.

Avery got out of her chair when she heard Kynlee moan and walked to the front, pulling her phone out and calling Jessica.

She answered on the second ring, “Avery. Hello. How are things?”

Avery smiled, “Good. How are you? How is the company? Is Ashton giving you grief still?”

Jessica chuckled, “When doesn’t he give me grief? He is the one who chose to almost run the generations long company into the ground. He knows that I don’t wish to keep giving him chances.”

Avery put her head in her hands, “I know. It’s understandable. But who is going to replace you? I know you wanted to retire a long time ago.”

Jessica sighed, “I wanted to retire to spend more time with you and Aynsley. But I just haven’t found someone I trust with my company. So far none of the men they have sent to replace me have made the cut. They are all the same. Money hungry and mean. Martin wanted a man like that to run the company before he died, but I refused to have this company led by men like that. Some of the people have worked here for so long because of how kind we are.”

Avery sat up a little, “Why don’t you pick someone from in the company? Isn’t there someone that would do a good job?”

Jessica went quiet and then said, “I wanted to do that. But the board shut me down. I had a candidate picked out and was willing to train him to do what needed to be done. But they knew that I didn’t have that power fully. That we needed the entire board to be alright with my choice and there are some members still in Ashton’s pocket. I’m afraid they are going to stage a coup. I have heard whispers that people want Ashton back and they won’t stop until he is in power again.”

Avery felt her brows draw together, “They can’t just kick you out. You hold the controlling shares.”

Jessica let out a small breath, “Not for long.”

“What does that mean? Grandma, what did you do?”

“I needed to choose someone to hold the controlling stock that wasn’t close to the company. And I wanted them to be family.”

Avery felt her stomach drop, “Is it me?”

Jessica laughed slightly, “You and your mother. I needed to be able to trust them and while you don’t have to do anything, I needed to know that our company would be taken care of. Ashton hasn’t been happy though. He wants to fight it and I’m scared that I put you and your mother in a bad position.”

“Why? I can’t run a company like that. I don’t know anything about it. Nor do I want to learn. What do we even have to do?”

Jessica sighed again, “You just have to be present at the next board meeting and help me get my candidate as the next CEO of our company. That’s all. That was a big reason I was coming to visit this weekend. So I could discuss this all with you.”
